About The Position

The ECMO Specialist IV role is within the Critical Care: ECMO department at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. This full-time position requires 36 hours per week and involves night shifts, weekends, and holidays. The specialist is responsible for providing respiratory therapies, initiating and maintaining mechanical ventilation and airway support, and managing Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) for various configurations (Veno-Venous, Veno-Arterial, and ventricular assist device). The role also includes documentation, reporting to relief personnel, performing point-of-care testing, and maintaining professional knowledge to enhance patient care.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an AMA approved two or four-year program for respiratory care, or satisfies the requirements in the admissions policies of the NBRC for registry examinations.
  • Meets all didactic and clinical training requirements set forth at WFBH for ECMO Specialist.
  • Attends all required in-services, staff meetings, team conferences and maintains competency assessments required for specific roles as a Respiratory Therapist.
  • Meets all clinical/educational competencies including emergency drills, annual examination, and clinical simulation held through the year.
  • Maintains required clinical patient care hours.
  • Obtains and maintains advanced certification in at least one of the following: Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, Neonatal Resuscitation Program.
  • Two years' experience in critical care or emergency care after completion of associate program in Respiratory Care or completed a Baccalaureate Degree in Respiratory Care.
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT)
  • Licensed to practice as an RCP in the state of applicable state.
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification, Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) AND Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
  • Maintain ECMO Specialist endorsement on applicable state Board of Respiratory Care (licensing board).
  • Certification by WFBH as an Extra Corporeal Life Support Specialist.

Nice To Haves

  • Participates in professional societies (board or committee level activities) and applies knowledge to best serve the patients' needs.
  • Minimum of 6 months experience with Advocate Health.
  • Minimum 3 years of overall ECMO experience.
  • Case study submittal.
  • AARC membership.
  • A minimum of 30 activity points as outlined in the ECMO Specialist Clinical Ladder program.
  • Certification for specific area of practice.

Responsibilities

  • Provides respiratory therapies, following age appropriate standards of care and departmental policies and procedures throughout the hospital.
  • Initiates and maintains mechanical ventilation and airway support following age-appropriate standards of care.
  • Completes documentation requirements for patient record and billing.
  • Reports information to relief personnel to ensure continuity of care for the patient.
  • Maintains the education and technical requirements for Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation for Veno-Venous, Veno-Arterial and ventricular assist device.
  • Maintains advanced certification, credentials and education requirements set forth by all appropriate state and federal agencies.
  • Performs and maintains competency for point-of-care testing, as assigned, ensuring compliance with WFBH policies and with applicable state and federal regulations.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge and ensures QI to enhance service to customers.
  • Ensures age/developmentally appropriate patient care is provided in accordance with Age-Specific Care Guidelines for the specific age groups served.
  • Adheres to the general hospital standards to promote a cooperative work environment by utilizing communication skills, interpersonal relationships and team building.
