About The Position

The employee provides support to students who have health, behavioral, or instructional needs to meet Individual Education Plan (IEP) goals and have success in the general curriculum. This role may involve various specific duties depending on the needs of the students, including behavior support, client-specific care, assisting in pre-kindergarten or visually impaired classes, acting as a job coach, or serving as a substitute bus driver. The position requires a positive attitude, strong work ethic, excellent communication and record-keeping skills, and the ability to maintain confidentiality and serve as a role model. The employee must understand and implement role differences between a teacher and a teacher assistant, understand student growth and development, and provide a positive atmosphere. They will also be expected to operate office equipment, complete tasks on time, and accept other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School diploma.
  • Minimum of 48 semester hours (earned at a Regionally Accredited College/University) or an Associate’s degree; meets highly qualified (HQ) designation under federal No Child Left Behind (NCLB).

  • Must meet Pre-K Teacher Assistant qualifications as defined by the NC Pre-K Program Requirements, State of North Carolina.

Responsibilities

  • Provides support to students who have health, behavioral, or instructional needs to meet Individual Education Plan (IEP) goals and have success in the general curriculum.
  • Participates in staff development and training related to student needs, including Non-Violent Crisis Intervention.
  • Prepares a variety of materials and operates office equipment necessary for material preparation.
  • Participates in regularly scheduled team meetings (e.g., Behavior Support Team, Transition Team Meetings).
  • Assists teachers of exceptional children in the classroom and non-classroom settings.
  • Develops behavior management strategies and behavior intervention plans.
  • May be required to participate in bus driver training and become a licensed Bus Driver.
  • Performs specific student behavior-related duties, including assistance in the bathroom, cafeteria, and classroom.
  • Works individually on assigned tasks and is an active participant in the teaching process.
  • Models for teachers how to modify instruction/tasks and implement strategies for positive behavior support.
  • Provides data collection on the fidelity of implementation of behavior intervention plans and student response.
  • Reports collected data to appropriate individuals, including administrators, teachers, parents, and other related service providers.
  • Cares for child(ren) with disabilities involving lifting and supporting the student; attending to physical, personal, and medical needs.
  • Assists in moving students around the campus.
  • Performs student-specific health-related duties.
  • Meets the student upon arrival and remains with the student until the school day ends, as needed.
  • Rides the bus with the student as needed.
  • Accompanies and monitors students on field trips.
  • Monitors the behavior and work habits of the student and keeps consistent data.
  • Works in the classroom(s) of their assigned student or other disabled students.
  • Assists with setting up the room for activities, greets students, and assists with belongings.
  • Supplements activities of the lead teacher, reinforces learning in small groups, provides one-on-one assistance, and supervises centers.
  • Monitors student behavior and employs strategies to protect students from injury; rewards good behavior; responds to inappropriate behavior.
  • Prepares daily snacks and accompanies students at recess.
  • May work with special programs, accompany classes on field trips, assist with physical education, assist with emergency procedures, and perform lunch/bus/hall duty.
  • Gives approved medications and assists sick or hurt children.
  • Prepares letters for parents regarding classroom activities.
  • Accompanies students to and from the bus and guides them to classrooms.
  • Accompanies students to mainstreamed classrooms and assists as necessary.
  • Assists students with toileting, including diapering if necessary.
  • Accompanies one or more blind students throughout the school day, ensuring safety.
  • Obtains Braille books and materials for students and ensures they have necessary materials.
  • Reads information on the board to students and describes activities.
  • Works with students with visual impairments to review skills and introduce new lessons.
  • Assists in preparing materials specific to students who are blind or visually impaired.
  • Assists teachers for the visually impaired in conducting functional vision assessments and learning media assessments.
  • Assists in the acquisition of job skills and job development, and monitors on-the-job performance of students with disabilities.
  • Provides support for clerical, technical, and general classroom functions.
  • Works to resolve obstacles to student work performance, such as social interaction conflicts and transportation issues.
  • Conducts data collection as the student develops job skills.
  • Transports students during regular school hours via the school system transportation program.
  • Adheres to all components of the Bus Driver Agreement and follows all parts of the Bus Driver Handbook.
  • Completes all bus reports accurately as assigned.
  • Monitors assigned students during extracurricular events as assigned.
  • Participates in school functions.
  • Other duties as assigned.
