About The Position

The EC Radio Communicator is responsible for using appropriate professional language on the radio, documenting pertinent information and times during radio calls, and communicating effectively with EMS using their call name and number. This role directs EMS to the appropriate location in the Emergency Center and obtains essential information for patient placement and trauma code activation. The communicator ensures that the charge nurse/flow coordinator is aware of pending arrivals and plays a crucial role in identifying and activating Code Stroke and Code STEMI protocols, including timely transmission of EKGs and notification of relevant personnel. Additionally, the communicator relays pediatric radio traffic, identifies pediatric traumas, and ensures they are directed correctly. Maintaining current knowledge of professional practices and clinical process changes, such as trauma, stroke, and STEMI criteria, is essential. The role also requires ensuring the radio is monitored during breaks and maintaining HIPAA compliance during all radio communications.

Requirements

  • Must satisfactorily complete Navient Health Emergency Radio Communication Training.
  • Must have excellent organization, interpersonal and communications skills, problem-solving and critical thinking abilities.
  • Must be able to work with accuracy under stress and in emergency situations.
  • Must comply with HIPPA protocol.
  • 1-3 years of experience as Emergency Medical Technician, Emergency Medical Dispatcher or Public Safety communications.
  • Completion of High School or equivalent.

Nice To Haves

  • Emergency Medical Dispatcher, Emergency Medical Technician/Basic Certificate, Paramedic preferred.
  • Will accept current Navicent Health Emergency Center Communications Specialist (with training provided by Navicent Health) in lieu of certification or RN with Emergency Medicine experience or familiar with Emergency Medicine terminology.

Responsibilities

  • Uses appropriate professional language on the radio at all times
  • Appropriately documents all pertinent information and times during radio call
  • Appropriately uses EMS call name and number when communicating with EMS
  • Directs EMS to appropriate location in the EC
  • Responsible for obtaining pertinent information to appropriately place patient in the Emergency Center.
  • Ensures that charge nurse/flow coordinator are aware of pending arrivals.
  • Responsible for obtaining pertinent information in order to activate the appropriate trauma code.
  • Appropriately identifies traumas based on Trauma Activation Protocols.
  • Calls Navicent operator in a timely manner to activate the appropriate code.
  • Ensures that charge nurse/flow coordinator are aware
  • Responsible for obtaining pertinent information to appropriately activate a Code Stroke.
  • Calls Navicent operator in a timely manner to activate the appropriate code.
  • Overhead page Code Stroke and pending treatment locations
  • Ensures that charge nurse/flow coordinator are aware.
  • Obtains pertinent information to assist in identifying a Code STEMI.
  • Ensures the EC physician gets the transmitted EKG timely.
  • Notify EKG tech of pending arrivals and treatment location.
  • Ensures the charge nurse/flow coordinator are aware
  • Relays all pertinent pediatric radio traffic to the Pediatric EC
  • Appropriately identifies pediatric tier one and tier two traumas and correctly directs them to the Main EC
  • Stays current on professional practice
  • Stays current on clinical process changes such as changes in trauma, stroke, and STEMI criteria
  • Ensures radio is being monitored while on break
  • Monitors and maintains HIPPA compliance during radio calls
