About The Position

The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is seeking a SPED/EC Teacher Associate to provide support to the instructional program within assigned classrooms. This role involves assisting the Lead Teacher in the supervision, care, and instruction of special needs students, implementing instructional plans, monitoring student behavior, and communicating progress to relevant personnel. The associate will work with individual students or small groups to help them achieve class skill levels and reinforce learning concepts. This position is crucial for supporting the educational and developmental needs of students in various school environments.

Requirements

Completed 48 hours at an institution of higher education OR Have an Associate’s (or higher) degree OR Pass a State approved assessment (Workkeys, ParaPro, or Para Educator).
Willingness to assist teacher in instructional activities.
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Ability to read and analyze and interpret general professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
Ability to write reports, general curriculum and learning theories, correspondence, and protocols.
Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators, staff, parents, students, and the general public.
Regularly required to sit, walk, stand and talk or hear.
Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, and depth perception.
Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs.
Ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, parents and community.
Ability to speak clear and concisely in written or oral communication.

Associates of Arts in Early Childhood (preferred)
Child Development Associate certificate (REQUIRED FOR HEAD START POSITIONS)

Responsibilities

Adapts classroom activities, assignments, and/or materials under the direction of the supervising/lead teacher to support students in a variety of school environments.
Administers tests, homework, make-up work, etc., to support lead teachers in general and special education classrooms.
Assists medically fragile or physically disabled students in maintaining personal hygiene.
Communicates with supervising instructional staff, professional support personnel, and/or parents to assist in evaluating progress and/or implementing IEP objectives.
Implements, under supervision, behavioral plans designed by the IEP team for students with behavior disorders or other special conditions.
Implements and adheres to lesson plans created by the general education and special education teachers.
Maintains instructional materials for the purpose of ensuring availability and meeting mandated requirements.
Monitors students during assigned periods in various school environments for the purpose of maintaining a safe and positive learning environment.
Provides instruction to students in a variety of individual and group activities to reinforce instructional objectives, implement IEP plans, and ensure student success.
Attends meetings and in-service presentations for the purpose of acquiring and/or conveying information relative to job functions.
May administer immediate first aid and medical assistance as instructed by a health care professional.
Participates in daily and long-range lesson and classroom activity planning.
Works with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce learning of material or skills.
Guides independent study, enrichment work, and remedial work set up and assigned by the teacher.
Performs other related classroom duties as assigned, which could include bus arrival and departure, toileting, and meal assistance.
