About The Position

This position assists in the implementation of a voluntary, quality, Early Childhood program that aligns with the New Mexico Early Childhood Program Standards. The role follows the National Association for the Education of Young Children’s Developmentally Appropriate Practice in Early Childhood Programs serving children from birth through eight years of age. The Instructional Assistant assists the certified teacher in implementing an instructional program which meets the total developmental needs of children (e.g. physical, cognitive, social and emotional needs) and includes health care, nutrition, safety, and multicultural sensitivity. The role also assists the certified teacher during home visits and parent teacher conferences. The position promotes Pre-K education and assists in recruitment of students for Pre-K programming. The Instructional Assistant attends staff meetings and all required trainings and meetings, participates in home visits and parent-teacher conferences, and assists in planning and attending parent involvement events. The role supports student recruitment and promotion of the Pre-K program, communicates effectively with children, families, and colleagues, and helps prepare and organize instructional materials. The Instructional Assistant supervises children in the classroom and during off-site activities, works as a team member to effectively facilitate the total operation of program goals and objectives, and displays a desire and enthusiasm for working with young children. The role requires effective use of time, punctuality, and good attendance. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • Associate Degree in Early Childhood Education or Active enrollment in a degree plan toward an Associate Degree in Early Childhood Education, with completion of 6 credit hours in Fall and Spring semesters and submission of grades and schedules to the Program Director
  • Bilingual Preferred
  • New Mexico Public Education Department Level III Educational Assistant License
  • Must meet one of the following criteria: A passing score on the ParaPro exam (457), OR A minimum of 48 semester hours of college credit from a regionally accredited college or university, with at least 15 of those hours in: Language Arts (3 hours), Mathematics (3 hours), Writing (3 hours), Reading, writing, math readiness, or professional education (6 hours)
  • Demonstrate strong collaboration and teamwork skills
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Maintains emotional control under stress.

Responsibilities
