About The Position

The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources is seeking an enthusiastic Eastern Regional Community Tree Specialist to support tree planting and community forestry initiatives. This role involves collaborating with local partners to enhance urban green spaces, strengthen canopy plans, and achieve community objectives. The position contributes to fostering healthier and greener communities.

Requirements

  • Two years of professional experience in natural resource management or natural resource education.
  • A bachelor's degree in natural resource management, parks and recreation, education, biology, forestry, ecology, geosciences, environmental sciences, or a closely related field, or an equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Possession of a valid Class C driver's license that is not under suspension.
  • Must meet the PA residency requirement.
  • Must be able to perform essential job functions.
  • Must pass a background investigation.
  • Must submit and have approved satisfactory criminal history reports including PA State Police clearance, PA Child Abuse history clearance, and FBI Fingerprint clearance.
  • Must complete Child Abuse, Criminal and Federal Criminal History Checks around the time of hire and thereafter every 5 years.

Nice To Haves

  • Obtain Pesticide Applicator License (Categories 9 and 23) within 1 year of hire and maintain this license moving forward.

Responsibilities

  • Work with municipalities, nonprofits, and partners to guide canopy plans and tree planting efforts.
  • Assist communities in establishing or utilizing advisory groups such as shade tree or environmental committees.
  • Help partners access resources and prepare applications for forestry grants.
  • Participate in outreach activities, public events, meetings, and presentations.
  • Compile yearly accomplishments and organize partner data on plantings, volunteers, and projects.
  • Encourage residents and community groups to participate in tree care.

  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • May be eligible for Alternate Work Schedule (AWS).
  • Opportunity to telework part-time, up to 5 days per pay period (requires securely configured high-speed internet and approved location inside Pennsylvania).
  • Option to report to the headquarters office if unable to telework.
