Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in Forestry or a closely related natural resource program OR Three years of experience in Forestry or a closely related natural resource program
  • Driver’s License Check - This position requires the operation of a state vehicle for the purpose of conducting official State business. If your license is from outside Oregon, you must submit at least a three-year court/DMV printout. If you have an Oregon driver’s license, a record check will be conducted on the top candidate to ensure a valid license and acceptable driving record.

  • Ability to make technical Decisions: Location of timber sale boundaries, estimate of timber size and defect, road location and design criteria and logging feasibility analysis.

  • Ability to make Field Decisions: Related to compliance with the NW Oregon Forest Management Plan, District IP, AOP, and timber sale or other service contracts, and compliance with Oregon Fire laws and Forest Practices Rules.
  • Skill communicating verbally and in writing with a variety of people to answer questions and explain information.
  • Skill writing clear and concise status, summary, technical, or narrative reports.
  • Skill using computer programs to manipulate, enter, or retrieve information.

Responsibilities

  • Recons proposed sale areas for timber sale boundaries, roads and landing locations, and other site-specific considerations such as high-risk sites, insect and disease problems, reforestation considerations, logging options and environmental safeguards.
  • Perform Upper Extent Fish Use/Seasonality Stream Surveys and enter data into GIS.
  • Posts timber sale boundaries and buffers.
  • Develops timber cruise design and cruises.
  • Conducts stocking surveys, survival exams and plantation evaluations in young plantation.
  • Files Notifications of Operations for district Reforestation and YSM work as needed.
  • Completes operations plans, branding hammer and log load receipt book transfers, scaling instructions and other log accountability activities.
  • Under the guidance of the Unit Forester, inspects timber sales for contract, Forest Practices, Forest Management Plan, fire and other forest law compliance and prepares inspection reports and status reports.
  • Works with Unit Forester to resolve issues.
