About The Position

Genentech has a strong commitment to developing novel, vision-changing therapies for patients with ophthalmic diseases. We are seeking a Research/Clinical Development Ophthalmology Trainee to join the Genentech Research and Early Development (gRED) and Late-Stage Product Development (PD) organizations. The successful candidate will focus on developing novel in vitro disease models for understanding disease pathogenesis and/or test novel therapeutic hypotheses for in vitro and in vivo. This is a hands-on laboratory position with abundant opportunity for collaboration with other researchers in a highly dynamic and interdisciplinary environment. Technical, as well as, intellectual contributions to the team are expected. This is a two year fixed-contract to provide the opportunity to perform discovery research in the area of ocular diseases and to gain specialized, in-depth training and experience in global, late stage, drug development at Genentech, a global, research-focused healthcare company. You will have the opportunity to perform discovery research in retinal degeneration focus areas. You will demonstrate the ability to conceive, plan, and conduct independent research. You will have a positive, resilient, and collaborative attitude with the ability to develop novel hypotheses and drive projects. You will have an opportunity to support a global ophthalmology development team. You will join cross-functional teams responsible for the overall program strategy and design, implementation, monitoring, analysis, and reporting of studies.

Requirements

  • PhD in Ophthalmology, Stem Cell Biology, Immunology, Neuroscience and/or a relevant area of studies.
  • Demonstrated level of some research experience within drug development.
  • Demonstrated level of proficiency in human cell culture, specifically in culturing and manipulating human stem cells and organoid models.
  • Demonstrated expertise in developing, qualifying, and applying 3D ocular or neural tissue models (e.g. retinal, brain organoids), co-culture systems, and microphysiological or microfluidic platforms, to support drug discovery and translational research.
  • Strong background in in vitro models or stem cell biology as evidenced by a first author paper published or accepted in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Advanced at least one key research project as evidenced by a first author paper published or accepted in a top-tier peer-reviewed journal.

Nice To Haves

  • Postdoctoral experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in retinal disease and/or neurodegenerative disease biology, as well as a basic understanding of immunology.
  • Experience in bioengineering, genome editing or omics technologies, including experience with in vivo rodent models.
  • Team player with a proactive attitude to tackle long standing, difficult problems in retinal biology and disease therapeutics.
  • Demonstrated ability to be motivated and capable of independent work in a collaborative and multidisciplinary environment with cross-functional interaction and engagement.
  • Demonstrated Interest in developing knowledge and skills for contributing to clinical studies.
