About The Position

Duties performed typically in a school setting. Performs professional work providing teaching and/or training services to students. Work requires frequent standing, sitting, light lifting up to 10 pounds, walking, vocal communication for expressing or exchanging ideas, hearing to perceive information at a normal spoken word level and visual acuity for preparing and analyzing written or computer data.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree or completion of 60 hours of college credit from an accredited college or university recognized by the Virginia Department of Education or demonstrated knowledge of and the ability to assist in reading, writing, and mathematics instruction by achieving a passing score on the ParaPro Assessment.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, time management, and public relations skills are required.
  • Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Must have good skills in operating personal computers and related software.
  • Must be adaptable to changing priorities, have the ability to work independently and/or with minimum supervision, and the ability to effectively handle multiple assignments simultaneously.
  • Must have good knowledge of and understanding of child growth and development and paraprofessional instructional procedures and practices.
  • Must have some knowledge of the instructional goals and the policies of public schools.
  • Considerable patience and the ability to work effectively with children and faculty members are essential.
  • Must be able to follow written and oral instructions and to perform all required tasks.

Nice To Haves

  • A minimum of one year working experience as an instructional assistant preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct the Richmond Public Schools early intervention eligibility screening process in grade K-2.
  • Receive required professional development and training prior to conducting academic interventions using research based methodology in reading and/or math in grades K-2.
  • Provide small group instruction.
  • Communicate with school personnel and parents of children regarding reading and/or math level and rate of progress.
  • Differentiate instruction based on assessment data.
  • Participate in team reviews concerning academic progress for students receiving services (upon request and availability).
  • Share student data with applicable teachers and administration.
  • Provide pre and post-assessment data to teachers and administrators.
  • Communicate and interact with students, parents, staff and community.
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation.
  • Follow required procedures and practices outlined in training.
  • Attend all required training.
  • Monitor appropriate use and care of equipment, materials and facilities.
  • Administer informal and formal assessments outlined in program.
  • Evaluate and assess student progress against instructional program objectives.
  • Manage classroom organization.
