About The Position

Family Health Centers at NYU Langone is seeking an Early Childhood Assistant Teacher to join their team in Brooklyn. This role involves assisting the Head Teacher in planning and implementing lessons, creating a stimulating environment, encouraging parent involvement, setting individual goals, recording observations, maintaining classroom cleanliness, and assisting with toileting and other classroom duties. The position is M-F with rotating shifts of 8a-4p, 9a-5p, and/or 10a-6p.

  • 1 year relevant experience

  • Qualified candidates must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Head Teacher in planning and implementing developmentally appropriate lessons.
  • Work with a team to provide a stimulating environment and activities.
  • Encourage parent involvement.
  • Set individual goals and record anecdotal observations for each child.
  • Keep room clean.
  • Help with toileting.
  • Perform other various classroom duties.
  • Inspect children for signs of illness or injury upon arrival.
  • Communicate directly with supervisor and readily accept and respond to supervisory inputs.
  • Implement suggestions and stay open to constructive criticism.
  • Seek and ask for help if needed and be willing to help others.
  • Approach criticism with a learning attitude.
  • Communicate directly, avoid gossip, and offer/share ideas and materials.
  • Assume a fair share of work and be friendly and respectful with others.
  • Handle transitions well and follow the daily schedule.
  • Provide outdoor playtime for children twice a day when weather permitting.

  • Turn in lesson plans and children's observations in a timely fashion.
  • Create an inviting learning environment.
  • Hold parent conferences on schedule and take an active role in encouraging parent participation.
  • Make every effort toward positive parent relationships and maintain confidentiality.
  • Be tactful with negative information and listen and respond well to parents.
  • Be available and approachable with parents.
  • Greet parents and children in a positive manner as they enter the classroom.
  • Do not speak about the child in front of him/her.
  • Make appropriate written documentation and referrals when needed.
  • Help develop language by responding to sounds infants make or words children say, singing, talking throughout the day, and interacting verbally during routines.
  • Set appropriate limits and have a clear and fair discipline procedure.
  • Reinforce positive behavior, avoid stereotyping and labeling, and work with children who are acting out.
  • Promote self-esteem in communications and encourage independence/self-help.
  • Be aware of developmental levels/changes and show respect for individuals.
  • Use a modulated, appropriate voice.
  • Supervise children closely and effectively throughout the day, always attending to children's needs before everything else.
  • Attend and actively participate in staff meetings.
  • Keep information about children and families confidential.
  • Ensure all required paperwork is done and/or due on time.
  • Quickly and effectively deal with unexpected situations and problems.
  • Remain calm in a tense situation.
  • Be flexible with assignments and schedule and give ample notice for absences.

  • Put infants to sleep according to their individual schedules and take care of infants upon awakening, making every effort to prevent SIDS.
  • Feed children according to their individual needs, family input, and CACFP guidelines.
  • Inspect fire exits and extinguishers regularly.
  • File incident or accident reports accordingly and as needed.
  • Notify parents and director when children are sick or get hurt.
  • Use bleach solutions to clean toys and surfaces as required and use the Germ Box effectively.
  • Follow diaper changing/potty procedures for children accordingly and as needed.
  • Follow the 'When to Wash Hand' policies as posted in the classroom and follow hand washing procedures accordingly.
  • Inspect outdoor and indoor play areas prior to play.
