About The Position

Geosyntec is seeking an Early Career Process Engineer to join its Water Process Engineering and Infrastructure Service Line in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Atlanta, Georgia; or Phoenix, Arizona. The role applies academic knowledge and practical experience to consulting projects involving process engineering, municipal and industrial water and wastewater treatment, stormwater management and treatment, and groundwater management and treatment for public- and private-sector clients. It is suited to an early-career engineer developing technical capabilities alongside the communication, business, and project-delivery skills needed for a consulting career. The engineer will support evaluations and design for water, wastewater, groundwater, and stormwater systems; analyze engineering and environmental data; assist with field activities; and prepare technical documentation and client deliverables under guidance from senior technical staff. The role involves collaboration with project managers, engineers, scientists, contractors, laboratories, vendors, and clients, as well as driving to project, office, and other business locations as needed. Occasional overnight travel and fieldwork are required. Health and safety training, medical monitoring, and client-driven drug and background testing may also be required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, environmental engineering, civil engineering, water resources engineering, or a closely related discipline.
  • Foundational understanding of process engineering principles, water and wastewater treatment processes, hydraulics, environmental chemistry, and engineering design fundamentals.
  • Interest in applying engineering principles to municipal and industrial water and wastewater treatment, groundwater treatment, stormwater treatment, water reuse, conveyance systems, and facility planning or design.
  • Strong technical writing, communication, and collaboration skills, including the ability to work effectively with project teams, laboratories, contractors, vendors, regulators, and clients.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments, meet deadlines, ask thoughtful technical questions, follow quality procedures, and contribute to high-quality consulting deliverables.
  • Willingness to perform fieldwork, including inspections, sampling, monitoring, pilot testing support, construction observation, equipment checks, and occasional overnight travel.
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license and satisfactory driving record for business travel.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degree in chemical, mechanical, environmental, civil, or water resources engineering with relevant coursework or research in water/wastewater treatment, process engineering, environmental chemistry, or hydraulics.
  • Academic, internship, co-op, research, or practical project experience involving treatment systems, process calculations, pilot testing, hydraulic analysis, infrastructure design, or environmental data evaluation.
  • Engineering Intern (EI) or Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification, or ability and interest to obtain certification.
  • Academic, internship, co-op, research, or early professional experience in process engineering, water treatment, wastewater treatment, environmental engineering, civil infrastructure, groundwater management, stormwater treatment, or related consulting work.
  • Coursework or experience involving treatment technologies, equipment sizing, pumps and piping, hydraulic modeling, mass balances, unit processes, physical and chemical treatment, and biological treatment.
  • Ability to organize, evaluate, and communicate technical data using Microsoft Excel, GIS, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, hydraulic modeling software, statistical tools, Python, MATLAB, R, or similar platforms.
  • Experience preparing or supporting engineering drawings, design calculations, specifications, cost estimates, technical memoranda, reports, proposals, and presentation materials.

Responsibilities

  • Support process engineering evaluations for water, wastewater, groundwater, and stormwater treatment systems.
  • Review chemical data, screen treatment technologies, and help develop engineering recommendations.
  • Support civil and infrastructure design for water and wastewater conveyance, treatment facilities, site layouts, piping systems, and related components.
  • Perform planning and engineering studies, hydraulic modeling, process calculations, mass balance evaluations, equipment sizing, and equipment selection.
  • Assist with engineering design drawings, technical specifications, calculations, and supporting documentation for treatment facilities.
  • Conduct fieldwork for design, pilot testing, construction services, system inspections, sampling, monitoring, data collection, and contractor coordination.
  • Analyze laboratory results, field measurements, treatment performance, hydraulic information, GIS datasets, and design inputs.
  • Prepare maps, tables, figures, data summaries, design support materials, and visualizations for reports and client deliverables.
  • Prepare technical reports, letters, memoranda, proposals, construction documents, and other written deliverables under senior technical staff guidance.
  • Coordinate with project managers, engineers, scientists, contractors, laboratories, vendors, and clients to support project execution and deliverable quality.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and develop consulting, technical writing, problem-solving, project delivery, and client communication skills.
  • Drive personal, company, and rental vehicles to client or company project or office sites and other business locations as needed.

Benefits

  • Competitive pay and benefits
  • Well-being programs to support employees and their families
