About The Position

This program is designed to provide veterinary students with practical, off-campus educational experiences in a contemporary practice. The externships are intended to contribute to students' practice-readiness, helping them to effectively deliver care after graduation. Rotations are structured to allow students, under veterinary supervision, to practice problem-solving, technical, and communication skills. Externs will work alongside the veterinary team and participate in all aspects of patient care. A stipend of $250 per week will be provided.

Requirements

  • Be enrolled in an accredited DVM program
  • Authorized to work in the United States
  • Carry professional liability insurance (AVMA PLIT liability insurance is free for all student members of the AVMA)
  • Submit a certificate of coverage with your application
  • Uphold the professional and ethical standards of the practice
  • Review the Veterinary Practice Act in regard to the scope of duties and supervision requirements
  • Dress and behave in a professional manner
  • Meet the expectations outlined in the employee handbook

Nice To Haves

  • Externships can range from two to eight weeks, but are typically two or three weeks in length.

Responsibilities

  • Gather histories
  • Perform physical examinations
  • Develop diagnostic and therapeutic plans
  • Scrub in to surgery
  • Assist in the management of medical cases
  • Provide wellness care
  • Develop client communication skills
  • Polish technical skills
  • Produce appropriate medical records (SOAPs) within the time limits of daily practice
