About The Position

This program is designed to provide veterinary students with practical, off-campus educational experiences in a contemporary practice. The externships are intended to contribute to students' practice-readiness, helping them to effectively deliver care after graduation. Rotations are structured to allow students, under veterinary supervision, to practice problem-solving, technical, and communication skills. Externs will work alongside the veterinary team and participate in all aspects of patient care. A stipend of $250 per week will be provided.

Requirements

Be enrolled in an accredited DVM program
Authorized to work in the United States
Carry professional liability insurance (AVMA PLIT liability insurance is free for all student members of the AVMA)
Submit a certificate of coverage with your application
Uphold the professional and ethical standards of the practice
Review the Veterinary Practice Act in regard to the scope of duties and supervision requirements
Dress and behave in a professional manner
Meet the expectations outlined in the employee handbook

Nice To Haves

Externships can range from two to eight weeks, but are typically two or three weeks in length.

Responsibilities

Gather histories
Perform physical examinations
Develop diagnostic and therapeutic plans
Scrub in to surgery
Assist in the management of medical cases
Provide wellness care
Develop client communication skills
Polish technical skills
Produce appropriate medical records (SOAPs) within the time limits of daily practice
