About The Position

This program is designed to provide veterinary students with practical, hands-on experience in a contemporary small animal practice. The externship aims to enhance practice-readiness and prepare students for post-graduation practice by allowing them to apply problem-solving, technical, and communication skills under veterinary supervision. Externs will participate in all aspects of patient care, mirroring the typical caseload of a small animal practice.

Requirements

  • Be enrolled in an accredited DVM program.
  • Be authorized to work in the United States.
  • Carry professional liability insurance (e.g., AVMA PLIT).
  • Submit a certificate of current coverage with the application.
  • Uphold professional and ethical standards.
  • Review the Veterinary Practice Act regarding the scope of duties and required supervision.
  • Dress and behave in a professional manner.
  • Meet expectations outlined in the employee handbook.

Nice To Haves

  • Externships can range from two to eight weeks, typically two or three weeks in length, according to college curriculum.

Responsibilities

  • Gather patient histories.
  • Perform physical examinations.
  • Develop diagnostic and therapeutic plans.
  • Assist in surgery.
  • Manage medical cases.
  • Provide wellness care.
  • Develop client communication skills.
  • Polish technical skills.
  • Produce appropriate medical records (SOAPs) within daily practice time limits.

Benefits

  • A stipend of $250 per week will be provided.
