About The Position

This program is designed to provide DVM students with practical experience in a contemporary veterinary practice, contributing to their practice-readiness and preparing them for post-graduation care. The externships are flexible, ranging from two to eight weeks, and typically last two to three weeks. The schedule includes days, evenings, and weekends. Externs will practice problem-solving, technical, and communication skills under veterinary supervision, participating in all aspects of patient care. A stipend of $250 per week will be provided.

Requirements

  • Be enrolled in an accredited DVM program
  • Be authorized to work in the United States
  • Carry professional liability insurance (e.g., AVMA PLIT)
  • Ensure coverage is current and submit a certificate of coverage with the application
  • Uphold professional and ethical standards
  • Review the Veterinary Practice Act regarding the scope of duties and required supervision
  • Dress and behave in a professional manner
  • Meet the expectations outlined in the employee handbook

Responsibilities

  • Gather histories
  • Perform physical examinations
  • Develop diagnostic and therapeutic plans
  • Scrub in to surgery
  • Assist in the management of medical cases
  • Provide wellness care
  • Develop client communication skills
  • Polish technical skills
  • Produce appropriate medical records (SOAPs) within the time limits of daily practice
