About The Position

As a Duck Creek Solution Architect III, on Hagerty’s DIT (Digital Innovation Technology) Architecture team you will need deep Duck Creek platform expertise to join us in creating software solutions that are well designed and take a long-term strategic view. In addition to owning the Duck Creek solution architecture across all product lines including Policy, Billing, Claims, Agency/Distribution, and DMS. This person will elevate the Solution Architecture team's existing Duck Creek knowledge, accelerating depth and confidence in Duck Creek architecture concepts, patterns, and practices across the full suite. The ideal candidate is as energized by developing other architects as they are by solving hard technical problems themselves. By considering the impact of design choices today against an understanding of a software product’s strategic direction, our solution architects seek to limit future constraints and provide the correct amount of flexibility while delivering business value with timely releases. The team achieves this by placing business capabilities into Hagerty’s Technology Portfolio of Software Assets, by architecting software services, designing APIs, and maintaining clear bounded contexts between each. As excellent communicators and leaders within the organization, they ensure all audiences are aligned on why our software solutions are required, how they are implemented, and what they achieve.

Requirements

  • Talented communicator
  • Meet people where they are and then build shared understanding
  • Comfortable and effective explaining technical concepts to audiences of varying level and technical skill
  • Lead and contribute to discussions around product design per business strategy
  • Bias towards creating visual artifacts that represent contexts, designs, and shared understanding
  • Enjoy learning and then sharing what you’ve learned with others
  • Write effectively about how software works
  • Breadth of experience building software
  • Fundamental knowledge of technology concepts
  • Deep knowledge of P&C insurance lifecycles including product configuration, rating engine logic, underwriting forms, and statutory reporting
  • Proven experience structuring inheritance hierarchies and managing Manuscript page configurations
  • Strong background with Duck Creek Author, Express, Server, Product Studio, and related toolsets
  • Hands-on experience with Duck Creek OnDemand SaaS deployments on Azure
  • Familiarity with Duck Creek Anywhere Managed Integrations (AMI) and cross-module integration patterns
  • Experience of being in a visible senior role and want to collaborate with others
  • Enjoy operating independently, and can positively impact multiple initiatives with competing priority
  • Love discovering the actual problem that needs to be solved as much as solving it

Nice To Haves

  • Read Domain Driven Design by Eric Evans
  • Familiar with modeling tools such as C4
  • When there’s no leader in the room, you tend to take the lead rather than wait
  • Comfortable in front of audiences of all sizes
  • Written .NET code
  • Designed and released APIs with both ReST and RPC styles
  • Love creating excellent API documentation with tools like OpenAPI
  • Managed engineers
  • Worked directly with Duck Creek's vendor engineering or product teams on escalated technical issues or roadmap discussions

Responsibilities

  • Act as a subject matter expert across complex domains within our business, including deep ownership across Duck Creek modules such as Policy, Billing, Claims, and Agency/Distribution Management System (DMS)
  • Build shared understanding around the encapsulation and distinct purposes of your domains (Duck Creek product lines and their configuration boundaries)
  • Decompose new business concepts and capabilities into bounded contexts (Duck Creek product configurations, rule sets, and integration touchpoints)
  • Create and maintain context maps that detail your context’s interactions with others in the IT Portfolio
  • Design and own inter-context communication specifications that serve the needs of the business now and in the future
  • Decide whether to extend, refactor, or build new software, including within Duck Creek across all product modules, and govern that decision with clear ADRs
  • Design HTTP APIs and messages that provide solutions to business capabilities and product features
  • Establish strong domain concepts in your API resources that can evolve naturally, over narrow bespoke solutions
  • Write excellent design artifacts (OpenAPI, etc.) that make solutions simple to implement and easy to test
  • Lead integration patterns with upstream, downstream, and core legacy enterprise systems via REST/SOAP APIs and Duck Creek Anywhere frameworks
  • Define NFRs (performance SLAs, availability, data retention) for Duck Creek-hosted services and validating that solutions meet them.
  • Elevate the communication of the enterprise around technology and how it serves our strategy
  • Explain technical concepts and solutions to nontechnical stakeholders both ad-hoc and by publishing solution artifacts
  • Champion the capabilities of your product domain(s) to stakeholders and other product teams
  • Inform product decision making via your technical knowledge and experience creating software
  • Mature Architectural thinking at Hagerty
  • Evaluate tradeoffs in solution design (e.g. speed, technical debt, vendor cost, complexity) and documenting how you reached your decisions
  • Educate others on Duck Creek design principles and constraints, owning the growth of specific knowledge of the platform across IT
  • Be opinionated on implementation based on your knowledge of your product’s roadmaps and the business’ strategy
  • Establish the standard measurements of architectural maturity, and teaching other architects how to adopt and prioritize them
  • Measure maturity measurements in the product contexts you support, and proposing ways to improve that maturity by working with Application Architecture and Engineering
  • Propose, publish, and adopt common integration patterns between contexts that can be easily re-used by other architects and teams
  • Establish a clear framework for when to configure within Duck Creek, when to extend via custom code, and when to bring in adjacent tools/solution
