About The Position

As a Drug and Alcohol Treatment Specialist 2 with the Department of Corrections (DOC), you take a leading role in guiding structured treatment programs that support meaningful change. You help inmates build the skills and mindset needed to make responsible decisions and move toward long-term stability. Requirements

  • One year of para-professional and one year of professional experience providing drug and alcohol counseling services directly to clients in a social work setting; and certification by the PA Chemical Abuse Certification Board as a "Certified Addictions Counselor"
  • One year of experience as a Drug and Alcohol Treatment Specialist 1 (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration)
  • Two years of professional experience providing drug and alcohol counseling services directly to clients in a social work setting; and a bachelor's degree that includes 18 credits in the behavioral sciences
  • One year of professional experience providing drug and alcohol counseling services directly to clients in a social work setting and a master's degree with major coursework in addictions science, psychology or social work
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training which includes 18 college credits in the behavioral sciences
  • Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA is required
  • Must meet the PA residency requirement
  • Must be able to perform essential job functions
  • Must pass a background investigation and meet Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) compliance requirements

Responsibilities

  • Lead Therapeutic Community (TC) and Outpatient Programs with groups to promote positive cognitive and behavioral change
  • Develop case histories, organize treatment plans, and maintain charts for assigned inmates
  • Conduct individual and group counseling sessions and coordinate with external service agencies
  • Perform assessments for inmates in need and oversee voluntary recovery meetings twice a month
  • Make recommendations related to parole planning, commutation, treatment adjustments, and referrals
  • Offer training and guidance to new specialists, students, and volunteers and complete required skill development trainings
