About The Position

As a Driver, you’ll play a vital role in supporting older adults by providing safe, reliable transportation to and from program activities, trips, and services. You’ll help ensure participants remain connected to their community while supporting daily center operations and maintaining program vehicles.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of driving experience with a valid New York State Driver’s License and no more than one moving violation within the past two years; or One (1) year of driving experience with a valid New York State Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and no moving violations preferred.
  • Candidates without a CDL who possess three (3) years of clean driving experience must be willing to obtain a CDL within six (6) months of hire.
  • No history of Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) convictions.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects and equipment.
  • Ability to climb stairs, bend, and stand for extended periods.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
  • Ability to relate to older adults with empathy, patience, and professionalism.
  • Strong attention to safety and customer service.
  • Must be available to work extended hours, evenings, or weekends as required for: Cooling Center operations, Make-Up Days, Emergency responses or directives from city funders.

Nice To Haves

  • One (1) year of driving experience with a valid New York State Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and no moving violations preferred.
  • JASA will reimburse CDL training classes and testing fees for drivers in good standing.

Responsibilities

  • Safely transport program participants to and from scheduled trips and activities.
  • Assist participants entering and exiting vehicles as needed.
  • Ensure participant comfort, safety, and respectful treatment at all times.
  • Drive agency vehicles in accordance with all traffic laws and agency policies.
  • Arrange for fuel and oil purchases following agency procedures.
  • Perform routine vehicle inspections, including checking fluids, tires, and safety equipment.
  • Change tires when necessary.
  • Maintain vehicles in a clean and orderly condition at all times.
  • Accurately complete trip tickets, mileage logs, and other required records.
  • Immediately report accidents, incidents, or traffic violations to supervisor.
  • Adhere to all applicable traffic regulations and agency safety standards.
  • Ensure vehicles are equipped with required emergency equipment, including spare tire and jack.
  • Communicate with participants regarding scheduled trips and program participation.
  • Collect participant contributions when required, issue receipts, and reconcile funds with supervisor.
  • Alert the Program Director or designee immediately regarding any concerns involving participants, including: Illness or medical concerns, Significant behavioral changes, Failure to respond during scheduled transportation, Other unusual situations requiring attention.
  • Assist with meal preparation, meal service, and center set-up activities as needed.
  • Enter trip and program participation information into the NYC Aging electronic database as required.
  • Support special events, trips, and program activities.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
