Driver Trainee (CDL A Permit)- SYGMA - Danville, IL
About The Position
This role assists the driver in unloading product at customer locations according to customer invoices, Preferred Work Methods, and company policies. The Driver Trainee will develop and establish good relationships with customers by providing excellent, courteous service, learn the route on the current bid, and assist in all aspects of route paperwork. The position requires working safely by following SYGMA’s Preferred Work Methods and attending CDL School when scheduled. Additional duties may be assigned, including assisting the driver in pre-trip inspections, coupling of equipment, ensuring tandems are properly locked out for weight requirements, providing assistance in routing with map reading and giving directions, helping with low clearance situations, and assisting with delivery set up at the customer location. This includes all three compartments of the trailer and requires directing the driver to ensure proper set up is attained safely. The trainee will also assist the driver in backing situations by watching for hazards and communicating using hand signals and/or verbal communication.
Requirements
- High school diploma/GED or the equivalent in work experience is necessary.
- Must be able to read and write clearly.
- Ability to read and speak the English language sufficiently to converse with the general public, to understand highway traffic signs and signals in the English language, to respond to official inquiries, and to make entries on reports and records.
- Must be able to communicate clearly to customers.
- A valid driver’s license, CDL-A permit.

Responsibilities

- Provides assistance in routing with map reading and giving directions on route.
- Helps with situations involving low clearances, i.e., getting out of vehicle and directing driver under a low underpass to ensure proper clearance.
- Assisting with delivery set up at the customer location.
- Assist driver in backing situations by getting out of the truck and watching for hazards, communicate using hand signals and or verbal communication.
