About The Position

The Driver Tractor Trailer/System Operator (DSO) operates refueling and defueling trucks in support of aviation refueling objectives. The role requires at least two years of documented experience and qualification to perform fuel servicing operations using mobile fuel servicing trucks, truck-supplied pantograph and hose sets, and fixed direct fuel servicing systems, including hydrants and hot pit systems. Before operating fuel servicing equipment without supervision, the DSO must pass base and flight-line familiarization and practical equipment and facility competency tests, be certified as qualified, and have their training record updated. DSOs must know applicable safety regulations for aviation and ground fuel servicing on and around the airfield and supported activities. They must demonstrate practical knowledge of inspecting and maintaining fuel servicing equipment and systems, including grounding and bonding, truck and refueling equipment inspections, and flight-line safety. They may also make basic entries in the Fuels Manager Defense System (FMD) or maintain dispatch logs. For hot pit operations, DSOs must be qualified and capable of actuating the deadman control and fire-extinguishing equipment during fuel servicing. Hot pit DSOs must complete training relevant to their assigned duties. The assigned deadman control (pit) operator remains in control of all direct refueling operations. The DSO is not responsible for aircraft taxiing or positioning, checking for hot brakes, ensuring dummy or practice ordnance is safe, determining or signaling engine shutdown and restart procedures outside the pit, or performing refueling coordinator (plane captain) or nozzle operator duties. Drivers must hold and maintain licenses required by applicable laws and regulations, including a current, valid Alabama driver’s license. Drivers who may operate vehicles or equipment on public roads must hold the appropriate license class. Records appropriate to the license class, including the employee’s DMV driving record and a current physical examination or certification record, must be maintained. A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and Tanker/Hazmat endorsement are required.
