About The Position

The Driver Messenger works in the BOVA Department and across the district as assigned. Under immediate supervision, the employee operates an automobile, van, or light truck to transport passengers or deliver messages, records, materials, and supplies. The role may include chauffeur duties for departmental officials, routine clerical work between deliveries, and handling petty cash for purchases made along delivery routes. Work is reviewed upon completion for prompt delivery and safe vehicle operation. Related duties may be assigned.

Requirements

• Possess a valid New York State operator's license: Class D, Non-CDL Class C, or CDL Class C with appropriate endorsements for the vehicle being operated.
• Have good knowledge of the jurisdiction's geography and traffic regulations.
• Have working knowledge of office practices and procedures.
• Operate an automobile, van, or light truck safely and efficiently in traffic and adverse weather conditions.
• Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Learn assigned clerical tasks readily and adhere to prescribed routines.
• Continually lift, lower, and carry packages, materials, or equipment.
• Meet the minimum qualifications on the Onondaga County Civil Service job description for this title.
• Pass a fingerprint-based background check; the candidate pays the $107.50 cost.
• Have a high school diploma or GED.

Responsibilities

• Operate a passenger vehicle or light truck to deliver records, materials, and supplies between departments.
• Receive written requisitions for petty cash purchases and account for expenditures.
• Perform routine clerical tasks in the office of assignment between deliveries.
• Provide minor routine vehicle maintenance and check daily for fuel, oil, battery, tires, general condition, and cleanliness.
• Handle, position, move, load, and unload materials, including by using a cart, hand truck, or similar equipment.
• Move items to and from storerooms and during pickups and deliveries; participate in team lifting of heavy or bulky objects when needed.
• Act as chauffeur for departmental officials when required.
