Drafting Specialist

Unlimited Technology•Herndon, VA
•$60,000 - $75,000•Hybrid

About The Position

The Drafting Specialist produces and maintains CAD drawing packages and shop drawings documenting integrated security technology and related low-voltage systems, including access control, video surveillance, intrusion detection, and intercom. Using specifications, site survey notes, sketches, redlines, and design direction, the specialist creates accurate, standards-compliant, installation-ready drawings and prepares as-built drawings for project closeout. The role supports permit submissions and Authority Having Jurisdiction reviews as required, as well as BIM coordination and documentation review. The position follows a hybrid schedule: three days in the Herndon, Virginia office and two days remote. Candidates under consideration must complete a written and practical CAD assessment. The Drafting Specialist reports to the Drafting Manager, has no direct reports, and works through the CAD and Design Ticket Request Queue. The role collaborates with engineering, project management, installation teams, subcontractors, and other project stakeholders. Occasional travel to customer and project sites is required, and the position includes site safety, customer confidentiality, and documentation responsibilities.

Requirements

  • Associate degree, technical degree, drafting certification, or equivalent experience in CAD, construction technology, electronic security, low-voltage systems, or engineering technology.
  • At least 5 years of technical drafting experience supporting access control, video surveillance, intrusion detection, intercom, low-voltage systems, or construction documentation.
  • Practical experience with Autodesk AutoCAD 2020 or later, including Sheet Set Manager, external references, dynamic block creation, attributed data, and linking data objects within the CAD environment.
  • Ability to read and interpret architectural, electrical, and security drawings, construction documents, specifications, and redlines.
  • Working knowledge of physical security systems and components, including card readers, locks, cameras, access control panels, power supplies, head-end equipment, and related network components.
  • Knowledge of construction documentation practices, industry drawing standards, applicable codes, and project specifications.
  • Proficiency with Bluebeam for drawing markup, review, and takeoffs.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and documentation discipline.
  • Ability to travel up to 20%.
  • Ability to meet applicable customer, site-access, badging, and background investigation requirements.
  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to sit and work at a computer for prolonged periods, read detailed drawings and screens for extended periods, and use a keyboard, telephone, and communication equipment.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, reach, climb ladders, and wear required PPE during occasional site visits.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 20 pounds occasionally; heavier items require assistance or mechanical aid.
  • Completion of a written and practical CAD and design assessment is required for candidates under consideration.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Autodesk Revit, Navisworks, or BIM coordination workflows.
  • Familiarity with Genetec, Mercury, Software House, Lenel/S2, Gallagher, Axis, Hanwha, Commend, Aiphone, or Milestone platforms.
  • Autodesk AutoCAD certification.

Responsibilities

  • Create and maintain AutoCAD drawing packages and shop drawings, including floor plans, device layouts, riser and one-line diagrams, device and mounting details, equipment rack elevations, load charts, point-to-point and interconnect diagrams, schedules, legends, notes, and supporting detail sheets.
  • Translate engineering markups, site survey notes, specifications, sketches, and design direction into complete drawing packages.
  • Apply established drawing standards, including title blocks, sheet numbering, layering, and the company block and symbol library; contribute updates to the library as needed.
  • Prepare drawings for permit submission and Authority Having Jurisdiction review when required by a project.
  • Support BIM coordination using Revit and Navisworks, and review documentation using Bluebeam.
  • Update drawings using redlines, field feedback, and approved change orders; maintain revision control and version history.
  • Produce as-built drawings from field and Systems Engineering redlines, and issue completed as-built packages to Project Management at closeout.
  • Escalate incomplete, illegible, or contradictory redlines and field documentation rather than assume installed conditions.
  • Maintain drawing logs, project documentation, and drawing archives for future service and project work.
  • Reconcile drawing content against the Bill of Materials and project scope, identifying discrepancies in device counts, types, or locations.
  • Communicate drawing status, progress, completion, delays, blockers, and outstanding information needs to Project Management and requesting engineers.
  • Request and follow up on missing markups, specifications, field dimensions, and device data needed to complete drawing packages.
  • Raise conflicts, discrepancies, and constructability concerns in source documents to the requesting engineer or Project Manager.
  • Coordinate with Project Managers, subcontractors, installers, engineering teams, general contractors, and architects as applicable to keep drawings aligned with project conditions.
  • Escalate requests that exceed available capacity, authority, or technical scope, providing documented findings.
  • Complete assigned tickets within established turnaround expectations and document work performed.
  • Assume work from other CAD and Design team members during absences, deadline pressure, or capacity constraints as assigned.
  • Review architectural, electrical, low-voltage, and security drawings to identify requirements, coordination items, and missing information.
  • Collaborate with project and engineering stakeholders to confirm understanding of drawing content and design intent.
  • Assist with request-for-information documentation and drawing markups supporting responses.
  • Perform site surveys as needed for drawing development and documentation updates.
  • Follow site-specific safety programs, stop work and escalate unsafe conditions, maintain professional conduct in customer environments, and protect confidential customer security information and design documentation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
