About The Position

Bloom Engineering, a Wabtec Company, focuses on improving the environmental sustainability of industrial heating applications, particularly in the aluminum and steel industries. Founded in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1934, Bloom operates globally with facilities in the United States, Germany, India, and China. As a Drafting Intern, you will collaborate closely with Bloom’s Design Engineering team and other professionals to support the creation and documentation of custom industrial combustion equipment. This role offers hands-on experience in applying drafting and CAD principles within an engineered-to-order manufacturing setting. You will contribute to translating engineering concepts and designs into precise drawings and documentation essential for manufacturing and assembling Bloom equipment. This internship provides practical experience with real-world engineering projects, illustrating the journey of drawings from design through manufacturing to final implementation at customer sites. This temporary role offers exposure to mechanical design, manufacturing processes, engineering standards, and the collaborative efforts involved in delivering custom-engineered products.

Requirements

Currently pursuing an Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Design, Drafting and Design Technology, or a related technical discipline.
Coursework or experience using 2D and/or 3D CAD software.
Basic understanding of mechanical drawings, dimensions, tolerances, and drafting principles.
Ability to read and interpret technical information and engineering documentation.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate work.
Comfortable working in both an office and manufacturing environment.
Willingness to ask questions, learn from experienced engineers and drafters, and incorporate feedback.
Ability to organize work and manage multiple assignments and priorities.
Effective written and verbal communication skills.

Nice To Haves

Experience with AutoCAD and/or Autodesk Inventor is preferred.

Responsibilities

Create and revise mechanical drawings under the direction of engineers and experienced drafters.
Develop and update 2D drawings and 3D models for components, assemblies, and custom-engineered equipment.
Incorporate engineering changes and redlines into existing drawings.
Assist with preparing drawings and documentation for manufacturing and assembly.
Apply Bloom drafting standards, drawing practices, and document-control requirements.
Review drawings for accuracy, completeness, dimensions, and consistency before release.
Assist with maintaining drawing files, bills of materials, and related engineering documentation.
Work with engineers, drafters, manufacturing employees, and other team members to resolve drawing or design questions.
Visit the manufacturing floor to observe how drawings are translated into fabricated and assembled equipment and develop a practical understanding of manufacturability.
Participate in design reviews and engineering discussions as appropriate.
Support ongoing engineering projects and other drafting assignments based on business needs.
