About The Position

The Domestic Violence Specialist provides essential support and supervision within a domestic violence protective shelter. This role is responsible for screening individuals seeking shelter, ensuring the safety and security of residents and the facility, and offering information, referrals, and daily support services to individuals impacted by domestic violence. The Shelter Advocate works collaboratively with on‑call professional counselors and program staff to maintain a safe, structured, and supportive environment for residents. (Part-Time Position)

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Strong communication, documentation, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to remain non‑judgmental, compassionate, and professional when working with individuals in crisis

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in social work, sociology, or a related field preferred
  • Minimum of two (2) years of social service experience preferred

Responsibilities

  • Screen callers requesting protective shelter due to abuse or threats of abuse, collaborating with an on‑call professional counselor to assist with admission decisions.
  • Monitor residents’ whereabouts and ensure accountability during assigned shifts.
  • Conduct house meetings with residents to address current issues, expectations, and facility updates.
  • Maintain the office and complete required documentation and log entries accurately and timely.
  • Ensure adherence to program rules and procedures, contacting the on‑call staff when issues arise.
  • Answer incoming phone calls, providing general information and appropriate referrals related to domestic violence services.
  • Complete client orientation and intake documentation for new admissions during the admitting shift.
  • Complete call sheets for all calls received, regardless of admission status.
  • Secure the shelter and office during assigned shifts to ensure safety and compliance.
  • Respond promptly to residents’ needs, including access to equipment, food, or other basic necessities.
  • Attend staff meetings, in‑service trainings, and supervisory meetings as scheduled.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
