About The Position

This position is responsible for providing training, technical assistance, and support to Child Protective Workers by helping to develop a protocol to manage domestic violence cases. The advocate serves as a resource for survivors of domestic violence and community partners involved in the child protection system. The role involves working with community agencies to enhance domestic violence victim safety, increase batterer accountability, reduce child removals from non-offending parents, and decrease family re-entry into the child welfare system. The Victim Advocate provides counseling, follow-up, information and referral, personal advocacy, criminal justice support, emergency legal advocacy, telephone contact, and assistance with filing Victim Compensation claims to domestic violence victims.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree in a human service-related field, sociology, psychology, counseling, social work, criminology or related field.
  • Two years experience working with victims of domestic violence and/or sexual assault.
  • Valid state driver’s license.
  • Ability to drive a vehicle in order to serve as advocate for victims at the hospital or police department and to transport victims to court related appointments.
  • Ability to travel throughout the community to serve as an advocate for victims of domestic violence or sexual abuse.

Responsibilities

  • Provides crisis intervention through telephone interviews, individual, and group counseling.
  • Provides information to participants regarding court proceedings, filing of injunctions, victim compensation, and relocation.
  • Assists clients by providing information to promote a healthy and safe lifestyle.
  • Provides training, technical assistance and support to Child Protective Workers.
  • Serves as a resource for survivors of domestic violence and community partners.
  • Works with community agencies to achieve project goals.
