About The Position

As a Petco Certified Dog Trainer, you will help further Petco’s mission as a Pet Health and Wellness company by enhancing the bond between pet parents and their dogs. You will use modern dog-training techniques and positive reinforcement to help pet parents develop well-behaved, happy, and healthy dogs. The role includes one-on-one training sessions, group classes, and advice on basic training, environmental management, and customized plans for specific training goals. You will also engage with guests to provide personalized solutions, including recommendations for pet health and wellness, nutrition, services, and supplies.

The role has two core responsibilities: providing dog-training services and delivering 360-degree solutions to Petco guests. Candidates must complete Petco’s six-week Dog Trainer Instructor Program, assigned learning modules, and workbook materials. After certification, trainers run and grow the dog-training business in a Pet Care Center, with marketing and internal resources available, and complete the Health & Wellness Certification Program for Dog. Candidates with relevant prior experience may qualify for accelerated training after passing skill and knowledge assessments.

This position has no supervisory responsibility. The stated starting rate is $12.00. The schedule may include weekends, evenings, and holidays as needed to meet training schedules and store operations.

Requirements

• Passion for animal care, training, and welfare, and genuine interest in improving the lives of pets and their pet parents.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact with pet parents and provide clear instructions, demonstrations, and applicable selling techniques.
• Ability to handle and work with dogs of all sizes, ages, and breeds safely and humanely.
• Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize responsibilities.
• Flexibility to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as needed for training schedules and store operations.
• Physical stamina to stand, walk, bend, and lift up to 50 pounds.
• Familiarity with computer systems and software for managing training records, schedules, and communication with pet parents.
• Complete the required Dog Training Instructor Program and Health & Wellness Certification Program for Dog.

Nice To Haves

• Prior dog-training experience that may qualify an approved candidate for accelerated training, subject to passing skill and knowledge assessments.

Responsibilities

• Provide one-on-one dog-training sessions and group classes using modern training techniques and positive reinforcement.
• Advise pet parents on basic training, environmental management, and customized training plans.
• Recommend and sell appropriate dog-training classes, training, and supplies.
• Keep accurate records of training sessions, progress, and pet-parent feedback; maintain confidentiality and professionalism.
• Work with grooming and veterinary teams to provide holistic whole-health solutions.
• Complete and apply ongoing training programs to maintain expertise.
• Engage with guests to recommend and select merchandise and services suited to their needs and generate future business through understanding of guests and their pets and connecting them to digital platforms.
• Demonstrate awareness and knowledge of animal health, welfare, and proper handling.
• Perform related duties to support Pet Care Center performance goals, including stocking, pricing, and displaying merchandise; completing cash-register transactions; and supporting OMNI shopping as needed.
• Follow operational guidelines, policies, procedures, and safety protocols.
• Promote teamwork, inclusion, and collaboration; complete other assigned duties and special projects.
• Evaluate guest inquiries and refer them to the Leader on Duty as needed.
• Complete Petco’s six-week Dog Trainer Instructor Program, assigned Workday Learning modules, and DTIP Student Workbook materials.
• Successfully run and grow the dog-training business in a Pet Care Center and complete the Health & Wellness Certification Program for Dog.
