About The Position

As a Petco Certified Dog Trainer, you will enhance the bond between pet parents and their dogs using modern dog-training techniques and positive reinforcement. You will provide one-on-one training sessions and group classes, advise on basic training and environmental management, and develop customized plans to address specific training goals. You will also engage with guests to offer personalized solutions, including recommendations for pet health and wellness, nutrition, services, and supplies.

The role includes completing Petco's six-week Dog Training Instructor Program and subsequent certification requirements, maintaining accurate training records, recommending appropriate classes and supplies, and working collaboratively with grooming and veterinary teams. You will also support the Pet Care Center's broader operations and guest experience, including merchandise, transactions, safety practices, and teamwork.

Requirements

• Pass Petco’s Dog Training Instructor Program; prior-experience candidates may be eligible for accelerated training if they pass skill and knowledge assessments.
• Pass the Health & Wellness Certification Program for Dog.
• Passion for animal care, training, and welfare and a genuine interest in improving pets’ and pet parents’ lives.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for interacting with pet parents and providing clear instructions, demonstrations, and selling techniques.
• Ability to safely and humanely handle dogs of all sizes, ages, and breeds.
• Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize responsibilities.
• Flexibility to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as needed.
• Physical stamina to stand, walk, bend, and lift up to 50 pounds.
• Familiarity with computer systems and software for managing training records, schedules, and communication.

Responsibilities

• Attend and successfully complete Petco’s six-week Dog Training Instructor Program and assigned learning modules and workbook materials.
• Recommend and sell appropriate dog-training classes, training, and supplies.
• Keep accurate records of training sessions, progress, and pet-parent feedback.
• Maintain confidentiality and professionalism.
• Work cross-functionally with grooming and veterinary teams to provide holistic solutions for pet parents.
• Complete ongoing training programs to maintain expertise.
• Engage guests and recommend merchandise and services based on their needs.
• Generate future business by understanding guests and their pets and connecting them to Petco’s digital platforms.
• Demonstrate awareness and knowledge of animal health, welfare, and proper handling.
• Support Pet Care Center performance goals and operational duties.
• Ensure merchandise is stocked, priced, and displayed appropriately.
• Complete cash register transactions and support guests with OMNI shopping as needed.
• Follow operational guidelines, policies, and procedures.
• Promote teamwork, inclusion, and collaboration.
• Evaluate guest inquiries and refer them to the Leader on Duty as needed.
• Maintain safety protocols for partners, guests, and pets.
