About The Position

The Environmental Management (EM) Graduate Fellowship Program (EMGFP) provides recent graduates with an opportunity to conduct hands-on research that supports the mission of DOE's Office of Environmental Management. This fellowship offers an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in laboratory research, characterization techniques, data analysis, and environmental remediation while working with an interdisciplinary research team. Fellows will receive mentorship from experts in chemical separations and have opportunities to build both scientific and professional skills. We are looking for motivated, early-career scientists who are excited to learn, ask questions, and contribute to a collaborative research environment.

Requirements

Candidates must have received a Bachelor's degree in chemistry, environmental sciences, chemical/environmental engineering, or related within the past 24 months or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.
Eligibility for this position is limited to candidates who graduated with their undergrad or masters at a Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs).

Nice To Haves

Experience with interfacial characterization tools (spectroscopy/microscopy/electrochemistry).
Experience preparing chemical solutions and analytical chemistry.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Experience with data analysis and graphing software.

Responsibilities

Understanding how ions interact, move, and separate at interfaces across a range of scales.
Developing new capabilities to characterize separation processes in real time at these interfaces.
Create and study novel interfaces using a combination of chemical and physical synthesis techniques.
Characterize these interfaces using spectroscopy, microscopy, and electrochemical methods.
Utilize molecular modeling to guide experiments, interpret results, and establish structure-function relationships to guide the design of improved separation processes.
