About The Position

The Documentation Engineer serves as the Technical Data Package (TDP) lead for Machinery Control Systems (MCS), Repair Station Consoles (RSC), and Engine Controllers (EC) on the DDG-51 Modernization and related Tech Refresh programs. The role supports the NSWCPD Code 552 DDG MCS Waterfront Engineering team through engineering drawing analysis, electrical hardware configuration management, documentation review coordination, and liaison work between system In-Service Engineering Agents (ISEAs) and government stakeholders. The engineer independently manages configuration baselines, leads documentation review cycles, maintains tracking databases, coordinates across engineering teams and government stakeholders, and may travel to ships to verify legacy configurations. Program-specific training and mentorship are provided; the role requires ownership of deliverables and the ability to complete tasks with minimal supervision. The position includes a structured six-month onboarding period at the Land Based Engineering Site (LBES), working 100% onsite. After onboarding, a hybrid schedule may be available depending on program needs, with at least 50% onsite at LBES. Required TDY travel to ships and naval installations is approximately one to two trips per year.

  • 1–3 years of experience in engineering drawing review or analysis.
  • Strong attention to detail when reviewing and verifying complex engineering configurations across multiple ship variants.
  • Ability to manage and track large volumes of technical documentation, including thousands of LARs, multiple TDPs, and wire lists.
  • Strong organizational and coordination skills to manage deliverables across multiple ISEAs, program offices, and shipbuilders.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, including comfort hosting meetings and driving action-item closure.
  • Self-motivation and ability to take ownership of deliverables and work independently.

  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, including reading, interpreting, and modifying electrical block installation drawings.
  • Experience with Jira or similar task-tracking and project-management tools.
  • Experience with configuration management, engineering change control, or Liaison Action Report processes.
  • Experience working in an industrial or shipboard environment.
  • Familiarity with shipboard machinery control systems, propulsion plant configurations, or HM&E systems.
  • Experience with Microsoft Access or other database tools for tracking and reporting.
  • Familiarity with Navy or DoD technical documentation standards, including MIL-STD and NAVSEA drawing practices.

Responsibilities

  • Lead review cycles for Technical Data Packages, Ship Installation Drawings, Wire Discrepancy Lists, Statements of Work, and Verification & Validation test plans across DDG-51 ship alterations and configurations.
  • Determine the appropriate configuration baseline for each hull and initialize review packages with applicable electrical block drawings, Wire Connection Lists, and supporting documents.
  • Distribute review packages to system ISEAs; collect, compile, and adjudicate their review comments for clarity and acceptability.
  • Assign comment-incorporation tasks to configuration and database specialists and verify updates before finalization.
  • Manage document finalization and delivery to BIW Planning Yard; archive delivered files on the program Wiki and SharePoint.
  • Review ISEA comments on Ship Installation Drawings, determine resolution paths, coordinate electronic Liaison Action Reports, and track LARs through closure.
  • Coordinate ship availability and scheduling for ship-check trips with the configuration specialist and system ISEAs.
  • Review ship-check data and verify legacy baseline hardware and signal cable configurations are captured correctly in NSWC TDPs.
  • Lead ship checks when the configuration specialist is unavailable.
  • Document discrepancies and incorporate findings into TDP updates or Wire Discrepancy Lists as part of the SOW package.
  • Coordinate technical data exchange between BIW Planning Yard and ISEAs and attend biweekly coordination meetings with NSWCPD Program Management and Waterfront Engineering.
  • Manage the Waterfront Engineering task-tracking dashboard and host biweekly status meetings with MCS, EC, and RSC ISEAs to review open actions and drive completion.
