About The Position

An Optometric Technician is a valuable asset to an optometrist as they assist in providing a world class Total Patient Experience. This team member is able to handle a wide range of duties while using optical equipment to perform the initial testing needed to prepare a patient for an exam with an Optometrist. The role involves facilitating patient flow, assisting the doctor in preliminary testing, verifying medical and vision insurances, and effectively communicating with patients, doctors, and managers. Responsibilities also include answering inquiries through phone, email, and in-person requests, operating various optical equipment, following scripting for testing equipment, cleaning examination equipment, and performing general office duties. The position requires a commitment to work hours that meet business needs, which may include weekends, schedule changes, or extended schedules, and consistently creating a positive work environment by being team-oriented and patient-focused.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 1 year in a position interacting with customers/patients or the equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Favorable result on background check as required by state
  • Must be able to provide proof of identity and right to work in the United States
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook
  • Frequent walking (75%), sitting (50%), and standing (50%)
  • Regular bending, stooping, and reaching (25–50%)
  • Able to lift, carry, push, and pull items up to 25 lbs.
  • Strong fine motor skills and full use of hands are essential, as the role demands constant grasping, writing/typing, and use of technology.
  • Visual and auditory acuity—including color, depth, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus—is required 100% of the time.
  • Occasional driving or climbing may also be necessary.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous medical office experience preferred
  • Previous ophthalmic experience strongly preferred

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate patient flow
  • Assist the doctor in preliminary testing

  • Embrace and execute our Total Patient Experience to build relationships with all patients while delivering great medical support
  • Comply with all company policies and procedures including HIPAA
  • Practice urgency at all times placing value on a patient’s time, as well as the doctor’s time and schedule
  • Operate manual lensometer, auto-lensometer, autorefractor/keratometer, retinal camera, visual field, GDX or OCT
  • Follow scripting for testing equipment (photos, visual fields, visual activity, etc.)
  • Clean all examination equipment including tonometer tip
  • Ability to interact with all levels of employees in a courteous, professional manner at all time
  • General office duties and cleaning to be assigned by manager
  • Consistently creating a positive work environment by being team-oriented and patient-focused
  • Commitment to work hours that meet the needs of the business which may include weekends, schedule changes or an extended schedule
