About The Position

The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is looking to hire a Weigh Station Technician at the Carson Motor Carrier Service Center (MCSC). As a Weigh Station Technician, you'll play a crucial role in ensuring the safety of motorists and protecting Virginia’s highways by monitoring and inspecting overweight and oversized trucks. You’ll work alongside State Police, local law enforcement, and other officials to enforce safety and weighing policies and procedures related to Virginia’s size and weight laws. The Weigh Station Technician ensures the compliance of commercial vehicle size and weight regulations on Virginia’s highways, contributing to the safety of motorists and protecting the integrity of Virginia’s highways, bridges, and tunnels. This role exists to monitor commercial vehicle activity at weigh stations, issue citations for violations of size and weight laws, ensure compliance with state and federal laws, and coordinate with law enforcement personnel. The Weigh Station Technician is responsible for monitoring the functionality and accuracy of equipment to ensure that proper operational standards are upheld and support DMV's mission of safeguarding lives and serving the motoring public. Training will be provided. The position will work rotating shifts on a 24/5 schedule. A shift differential of $1,500.00 will be added to the base salary.

Requirements

  • Proficiency in collecting, editing, and manipulating data using computers.
  • Strong eye/hand coordination for tracking trucks on computer screens while monitoring highway traffic.
  • Ability to troubleshoot truck equipment issues.
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to analyze data to recommend traffic control measures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and tactfully with customers and staff.
  • Capability to work in confined spaces for extended periods.
  • Capability to maintain focus on safety monitoring.
  • Capability to work rotating or permanent schedules.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift and transport 50 pounds.
  • Ability to operate lawn maintenance equipment.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • A driving record that reflects respect for DMV regulations.
  • Must complete the I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification Form.
  • Must consent to a background check.
  • Must consent to a fingerprint-based criminal history check, driver record check, and background investigation, if applicable.
  • Must consent to DMV being alerted of any moving violation convictions, including license suspension.
