About The Position

The Division leader, Controls and Power, provides strategic, technical, and operational leadership for accelerator systems essential to operations within the Accelerator Directorate. This role ensures the division delivers robust, reliable, and maintainable controls and power systems and takes deep ownership of their performance throughout their operational lifecycle. Responsibilities include long range planning, project execution, operational stewardship, and full personnel and budget authority.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in an ABET-accredited engineering discipline with 12+ years of experience. Or a Master's/PhD in an ABET-accredited engineering discipline with 10+ years of engineering experience.
  • Experience leading large engineering organizations; managing major engineering projects; contributing to national-scale science or technical initiatives; chairing reviews; and developing engineering policies and standards.
  • Recognized expertise in Hardware/Software Engineering and Accelerator Technology.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and project planning skills.
  • Ability to lead complex technical programs.
  • Proven ability to manage engineering, scientific, and technical staff, multimillion-dollar budgets, and cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to build collaborations, develop specifications for complex systems, and deliver reliable, well‑documented engineering solutions.
  • Ability to build collaborations and work effectively with sponsors.

Responsibilities

  • Develops and executes long-range strategic plans for Controls and Power aligned with DOE and laboratory priorities.
  • Oversees strategic development of accelerator engineering capabilities, infrastructure, and workforce expertise.
  • Ensures integration with crosscutting laboratory initiatives and infrastructure planning.
  • Leads collaborative planning efforts with engineering, project, and scientific divisions.
  • Provides oversight of all Controls and Power and programs, ensuring delivery of functional, reliable systems that meet scope, schedule, and budget commitments.
  • Leads and contributes to major, technically complex engineering projects from concept through their full operational lifecycle.
  • Plans, estimates, and leads large or complex engineering projects, coordinates technicians and engineering teams.
  • Identifies engineering problems, evaluates alternatives, and implements optimized solutions while enforcing engineering standards, configuration control, and lifecycle documentation practices.
  • Participates in procurement, manufacturing, installation, testing, and operational readiness.
  • Partners closely with accelerator operations to address system issues, implement corrective actions, and drive continuous improvement.
  • Leads operational readiness reviews and ensures effective transitions from construction to operations.
  • Exercises full authority over division personnel actions including hiring decisions, promotions, performance evaluations, professional development, disciplinary actions, and terminations.
  • Builds and sustains a high‑performing, inclusive organization with clear structure, effective succession planning, and strong mentoring for scientific, technical, and operational roles.
  • Develops and retains talent required for ongoing operational reliability and long‑term engineering capability.
  • Oversees division budgets, resource allocations, and operational planning.
  • Develops and controls project budgets, schedules, and technical baselines.
  • Ensures compliance with DOE and laboratory operational, reporting, and ES&H requirements.
  • Supports long-term engineering infrastructure planning, systems upgrades, and facility capability improvements.
  • Serves as primary point of contact with DOE and external scientific partners.
  • Represents Controls and Power capabilities in national and international design reviews and technical advisory groups.
  • Communicates system performance, upgrade needs, operational reliability trends, and long‑term infrastructure strategies.
