About The Position

The Division Chief will provide strategic, academic, clinical, and operational leadership for all activities within the Division of Hematology/Oncology, ensuring alignment with the missions of the Department of Medicine, the University of Illinois College of Medicine, and UI Health. The successful candidate will be an accomplished physician-scientist, clinician-investigator, or academic physician with a national reputation in hematology and/or oncology. The Chief will be responsible for promoting clinical excellence, expanding research programs, advancing educational initiatives, recruiting and developing faculty, and fostering a collaborative culture that supports innovation and academic achievement.

Requirements

  • MD, DO, or equivalent degree.
  • Board certification in Medical Oncology, Hematology, or Hematology and Medical Oncology.
  • Qualification for appointment in the tenure system at the Associate Professor or Professor level within the University of Illinois College of Medicine.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience within an academic medical center, cancer center, or healthcare organization.
  • Distinguished record of clinical excellence, scholarship, and academic achievement.
  • Evidence of successful mentoring, faculty development, and educational leadership.
  • Demonstrated success in obtaining extramural funding and supporting research growth.
  • Experience managing complex clinical, research, and educational programs.
  • Eligible for a State of Illinois Medical License, State of Illinois Controlled Substance License, DEA License, and BLS Certification.
  • Eligible for medical staff privileges at UI Health.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a strategic vision that advances the Division's clinical, research, and educational missions.
  • Lead faculty recruitment, retention, mentorship, and professional development initiatives.
  • Promote a culture of collaboration, inclusion, innovation, and accountability.
  • Represent the Division within the Department of Medicine, College of Medicine, UI Health, and external professional organizations.
  • Provide leadership for comprehensive hematology and oncology clinical programs.
  • Maintain an active clinical practice and promote excellence in patient-centered care.
  • Expand access to specialized hematologic and oncologic services and identify opportunities for programmatic growth.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to enhance quality, safety, and patient outcomes.
  • Maintain a nationally recognized record of scholarly achievement and academic contributions.
  • Foster growth in translational, clinical, population health, and laboratory-based research programs.
  • Support faculty in securing federal, foundation, and industry-sponsored research funding.
  • Promote interdisciplinary collaborations across the University of Illinois Cancer Center and other institutional partners.
  • Support excellence in undergraduate, graduate, and continuing medical education.
  • Provide leadership and mentorship for fellows, residents, and medical students.
  • Partner with fellowship leadership to ensure compliance with ACGME standards and maintain a robust learning environment.
  • Encourage faculty engagement in teaching, mentoring, and educational scholarship.
  • Manage divisional finances, clinical operations, workforce planning, and resource allocation.
  • Ensure responsible stewardship of divisional resources in support of strategic goals.
  • Establish metrics and accountability measures to evaluate divisional performance.
  • Collaborate with Department, College, Cancer Center, and Health System leadership to support institutional priorities.
