Under the supervision of the school principal, the teacher is responsible for instruction, student progress tracking, and discipline for students in assigned classes, as well as other duties as assigned and required. The role is projected for grades 4–8 and focuses on students with diverse learning needs. The teacher develops achievable IEP goals comparable to those of a student's peers in accordance with Illinois IEP guidelines, and collaborates with case managers, counselors, general education teachers, and multidisciplinary teams to address students' instructional, social, and well-being needs. Within the CPS Framework for Teaching, the teacher continuously improves their practice; demonstrates deep knowledge of content, pedagogy, and students; designs coherent instruction and assessments; and creates a respectful, well-managed classroom that values students' cultural, racial, and linguistic diversity. The teacher provides engaging, appropriately challenging instruction, communicates effectively, exercises professional judgment, prioritizes student safety, personalizes learning through curriculum supplements and technology, and supports the district's vision and commitment to equity, cultural competence, high expectations, developmental appropriateness, and individual student needs. Employment with CPS requires employees to reside in Chicago or become residents within six months of hire, subject to possible exemptions for certain high-needs positions. New hires must complete CPS onboarding requirements, including tuberculosis and drug testing and state and federal criminal background checks.
