About The Position

The Fayette County Public Schools is seeking a Districtwide Bus Driver for the 26-27 school year. This is an hourly, classified position responsible for operating a school bus over designated routes, ensuring the safe and efficient transportation of students. The role involves picking up and discharging students, performing daily vehicle inspections and maintenance, and assisting with the loading and unloading of students, including those with special needs. The driver will also be responsible for maintaining discipline on the bus, communicating with parents, and performing emergency evacuation drills. This position requires adherence to all local, State, and federal policies and guidelines related to pupil transportation.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or G.E.D. Certificate
  • One year of experience in the operation of a motor vehicle
  • Valid Kentucky Commercial Class B driver's license, including passenger endorsement
  • School Bus Certificate
  • Subject to random drug testing
  • Must pass annual driving record check and physical examination
  • Knowledge of safe driving practices
  • Knowledge of provisions of the State Motor Vehicle Code and Kentucky Administration Regulations applicable to the operation of vehicles transporting students
  • Knowledge of first aid practices
  • Knowledge of interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy
  • Ability to operate a school bus over designated routes in accordance with time schedules, picking up and discharging students
  • Ability to maintain order and discipline among students while driving a school bus
  • Ability to maintain assigned vehicle in a clean and safe operating condition
  • Ability to recognize equipment malfunctions and take appropriate action
  • Ability to learn designated bus routes including stops and traffic hazards
  • Ability to maintain routine records
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions
  • Ability to meet schedules and timelines
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing

  • Must be able to lift heavy objects (minimum 50 lbs.)

Responsibilities

  • Operate a school bus over designated routes in accordance with time schedules and regulations.
  • Transport students to and from school, special events, and field trips.
  • Pick up and discharge students at established bus stops, reporting safety incidents.
  • Maintain the bus in safe operating condition through daily inspections and driver maintenance.
  • Check and maintain fuel, oil, and water levels; check brakes, brake lights, and doors.
  • Report mechanical defects and malfunctions to appropriate personnel.
  • Maintain order and discipline among students on the bus, following District policies.
  • Interact with parents regarding questions, concerns, and disputes.
  • Perform emergency bus evacuation drills as required.
  • Transport physically and mentally handicapped children, including lifting and securing wheelchairs.
  • Assist in the loading and unloading of handicapped children.
  • Observe applicable local, State, and federal policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Fuel and clean the exterior and interior of buses.
  • Maintain records of vehicle maintenance, miles driven, and number of children transported.
  • Prepare student conduct, incident, and accident reports.
  • Attend safety and preventive emergency meetings when required.
  • Utilize two-way radio for communication.
  • Perform first aid according to established guidelines.
  • Demonstrate the ability to communicate in more than one language or willingness to learn.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Maintain regular attendance.
