About The Position

Performs all activities required to safely operate a school bus transporting students and other authorized personnel to and from schools and school-related events. This includes transporting students safely on assigned/unassigned routes according to a definite time schedule, providing transportation for field trips and extracurricular events, and ensuring the care and supervision of students during boarding and departure. The role involves checking for additional assignments, communicating with dispatch, performing state-required pre-trip inspections, maintaining a clean and healthy bus environment, inspecting the bus after each run, and enforcing rules of conduct. The driver must stay informed about weather conditions and school schedule changes, complete various reports, adhere to the Manassas City Schools Transportation Handbook, and conduct semi-annual bus evacuation drills. Immediate reporting of accidents is required, along with ensuring students are properly seated. Maintaining a good driving record and required certifications (CDL, CPR, First Aid) is essential. The driver must also return Pre-K and kindergarten students if a responsible party is not present, report moving violations, maintain confidentiality, and secure wheelchairs and other restraining devices. Assistance may be required for bus attendants monitoring students with special health conditions and ensuring students are properly seated and secured. Supervision of the bus attendant and performing other assigned duties are also part of the role.

Requirements

  • Must be able to read and write.
  • Must possess or obtain a class B Commercial Driver’s License, in good standing, issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls.
  • Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to: a personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine.
  • Some climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, or repetitive motions required.
  • General knowledge of the city’s layout and ability to read a road map.
  • Able to converse over a two-way radio for communication.
  • Able to lift minimum of 50 pounds.
  • Able to detect equipment malfunction.
  • Knowledge of and compliance with the State Board of Education’s pupil rider safety instruction for emergency evacuation and fire drills.
  • Knowledge of how to operate the lift and how to operate the air brakes.
  • Ability to interactive positively with, gain respect of, and maintain discipline over student passengers to ensure that behavior is controlled.
  • Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school officials, the general public, co-workers, students, and parents.
  • Knowledge of passenger’s disabilities.
  • Maintains a good driving record and CDL as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Maintains CPR and First Aid Certifications.

Responsibilities

  • Transports students safely on an assigned/unassigned route according to a definite time schedule.
  • Provides transportation for field trip, athletic contests, and extracurricular events.
  • Provides care and supervision of the students by taking appropriate safety precautions when students are boarding and departing.
  • Reviews the sign-up sheet on the board for additional assignments.
  • Checks-in with the dispatcher for any changes in normal duties or new student passengers.
  • Accepts additional assignments as required.
  • Performs state required pre-trip inspection in accordance with Manassas City Public Schools and the commercial driver’s license (CDL), which includes but is not limited to fuel, oil, water, lights, brakes, and steering.
  • Reports any problems to the Maintenance Department.
  • Maintains a clean bus, ensuring a healthy environment for students and maintaining presentable school transportation.
  • Inspects the bus after every run for students, lost items, and damage.
  • Maintains a safe environment within the bus by enforcing rules of conduct.
  • Reports misconduct to a building administrator and the student’s teacher.
  • Remains abreast of weather conditions and school closings, early dismissals, or late openings.
  • Prepares and completes reports such as a daily maintenance form, timesheets, route schedules, field trip forms, mileage records, and discipline referrals.
  • Adheres to the Manassas City Schools Transportation Handbook.
  • Conducts semi-annual bus evacuation drills.
  • Reports all accidents immediately to the transportation dispatcher.
  • Ensures that all students are properly seated before putting the vehicle in motion and during the entire trip.
  • Maintains a good driving record and CDL as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Operates the vehicle in compliance with all traffic and safety laws and regulations.
  • Maintains CPR and First Aid Certifications.
  • Returns Pre-K and kindergarten students to school if a responsible party is not present at the bus stop.
  • Reports all moving violations, personal or work related, including DUI’s.
  • Maintains confidentiality of student’s medical diagnosis, issues, and student information.
  • Secures wheelchairs, car seats, and other restraining devices on the bus as needed.
  • Assists the bus attendant in monitoring students with special health conditions, such as seizures and heart conditions.
  • Assists the bus attendant ensure that students are properly seated and secured.
  • Supervises the bus attendant.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
