About The Position

The District Nurse provides direct care to students using professional assessment skills, the nursing process, individualized healthcare plans (IHPs), and established school health protocols. This role involves health counseling and instruction for individual students, assessing and responding to healthcare concerns, illnesses, and injuries. The nurse communicates with parents, ensures appropriate referrals and follow-up, and serves as a liaison between school personnel, families, healthcare professionals, and the community. Responsibilities include notifying parents of accidents or illnesses, securing emergency medical care, developing and implementing IHPs for medically fragile students, administering medications, monitoring immunization records, maintaining confidential health records, conducting mandatory screenings, reporting communicable diseases, and potentially making home visits.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct care using professional assessment skills, the nursing process, individualized healthcare plans (IHPs), and established school health protocols.
  • Provide health counseling and instruction to individual students.
  • Assess and respond to student healthcare concerns, illnesses, and injuries.
  • Communicate with parents regarding individual students, and ensure appropriate referrals, and follow up as needed.
  • Serve as a liaison between school personnel, the family, healthcare professionals, and the community.
  • Notify parents of accident or illness.
  • Secure emergency medical care for students as needed.
  • Develop and implement individualized healthcare plans (IHPs) and evaluate outcomes of skilled and direct nursing care and procedures for medically fragile students to ensure safe integration of the student into the school environment.
  • Provide first aid and emergency care as needed.
  • Monitor students with chronic health conditions such as diabetes, asthma, seizures, allergies, and other medically complex needs.
  • Serve as health advocate for students.
  • Ensure that medications are administered to students according to district policy and procedures and physician orders.
  • Document medications administered, treatments provided, and student visits to the clinic.
  • Monitor immunization records and ensure compliance.
  • Maintain accurate, confidential student health records in compliance with FERPA, HIPPA (where applicable), and district requirements.
  • Establish and implement effective procedures for carrying out mandatory screening programs, conduct the screenings, collect data, and complete required reports.
  • Report communicable diseases and health concerns according to state and local guidelines.
  • May make home visits to help with student health problems as necessary.
