About The Position

The Utah State Courts are seeking two experienced officials to serve as District Court Commissioners in the newly established Debt Collection and Housing Action Division. These positions will have statewide jurisdiction and will be based at the Matheson Courthouse in Salt Lake City. Division Commissioners are appointed by the Judicial Council and will perform duties consistent with Utah Code 78A-5-103, pertaining to the Debt Collection and Housing Action Division of the District Court, under the direction of the Board of District Court Judges. Successful candidates must adhere to the Code of Judicial Conduct, be members of the Utah State Bar in good standing, be at least 25 years of age, a U.S. citizen, and a Utah resident for three years preceding appointment and while serving. These are full-time, FLSA-exempt, at-will positions with benefits, subject to Judicial Council approval, projected to begin in November 2026.

Requirements

At least 25 years of age
A citizen of the United States
A resident of Utah for three (3) years preceding appointment
A resident of Utah while serving as Commissioner
Must reside in the State of Utah
Member of the Utah State Bar in good standing
Adhere to the Code of Judicial Conduct
Successfully pass a criminal history check
Meet Driver’s License Requirements (subject to Driver Eligibility standards)

Responsibilities

Set pretrial conferences
Conduct settlement conferences
Refer appropriate cases to mediation where available
Make a record of parties’ settlement agreements
Review pleadings and status of discovery
Manage supplemental hearings and post-judgment collections, and certify cases ready for trial
Resolve objections to writs
Hold occupancy hearings and makes recommendations
Help establish and strengthen the Division by providing recommendations to the District Court regarding caseflow management and court processes
Make recommendations to the District Court regarding any issue, including recommendations for entry of final judgment
Perform other division commissioner duties as assigned by the Board of District Court Judges
