About The Position

The Distribution Planning Engineer collaborates on and performs distribution studies, including voltage, thermal, N-1, and power factor assessments. The role analyzes complex distributed energy resource (DER) and new-customer load interconnections at multiple voltage levels, applies established distribution criteria and utility engineering practices to identify system deficiencies, and develops recommendations for distribution automation and resiliency programs. The engineer also seeks ways to improve the precision and efficiency of distribution planning and develops a working understanding of tools used in daily planning work, including GIS (ArcFM), SAP, and load data systems. Depending on level and responsibilities, the engineer may develop subject matter expertise to mentor and support colleagues, provide technical leadership on complex projects, collaborate with internal teams and industry peers, and direct contractors on company policy, standards, and best practices. The role may assist with storm restoration efforts. The position is in-office in Rochester or Binghamton, New York, and reports to the Manager of Distribution Planning (RG&E).
