The role involves installing, removing, repairing, and maintaining transmission and distribution poles, towers, line conductors, transformers, and associated equipment. It also includes assisting in training apprentice linemen, handling emergency operations, and performing other related tasks. The starting pay is $56.43 per hour.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or applicable equivalent in job training or study, preferably supplemented by courses in electrical circuits, wiring diagrams and related equipment equivalent to three months of full-time study.
  • Four years of Company experience as Lineman Apprentice, or equivalent, of which one year should have been as Lineman Apprentice-4th Year.
  • Good working knowledge of line work and electrical circuits.
  • General familiarity with local substation locations, existing voltages, street locations and rural areas.
  • Indicated ability to work on own initiative, to lead and cooperate with fellow employees, to train and instruct apprentice linemen, and to use tact in dealing with the public.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Thorough familiarity with the Company's safety policies and practices, particularly with respect to taking equipment out of service, holding for clearance and restoring to service.
  • Alert, resourceful, capable of carrying out responsibilities involved in this work and able to make quick and correct decisions in emergencies.
  • Ability to receive and transmit orders and instructions in a manner that will obtain cooperation and satisfactory work results from men assigned to work with him.
  • Satisfactorily completed the Company's training courses for the job of Lineman "A" and have passed the promotional examination in connection therewith.
  • Must pass the entrance examination (written and qualifying) into the grade of Line Specialist – Journeyman.
  • Ability to successfully complete SAT.
  • Ability to attend various training classes.
  • DOT Certification.
  • DOT Physical.
  • Ability to obtain a valid Class A commercial driver’s license (CDL) in the state for which you are hire within one year of hire.
  • Successful background and drug screen.
  • Must live within 30 road miles of the assigned Operations Center.
  • Weight restriction of 275 pounds as an essential function of the job.
  • Ability to stand a minimum of 5-6 hours.
  • Ability to sit for a minimum of 2-3 hours.
  • Ability to move frequently to unload equipment and to install/maintain/repair equipment.
  • Ability to lift up to 76 pounds.
  • Ability to push/pull weights up to 116 pounds.
  • Ability to carry up to 90 pounds.
  • Ability to frequently climb or use authorized equipment to reach various heights and breadths.
  • Ability to frequently and repetitively bend/stoop/squat.
  • Ability to differentiate between colors (color vision).
  • Manual dexterity to operate small hand tools, turn small knobs, etc.
  • Ability to obtain respirator clearance.

Nice To Haves

  • Certificate from Lineman’s Training School or currently enrolled.

  • Experience in the electric utility industry.
  • Training and/or work experience with climbing different types of structures (wood, steel, etc.).
  • Previous work experience or training working near power lines and electricity (residential, commercial, overhead lines, or underground lines).
  • Experience with responding to natural disasters or emergency situations (storm response such as hurricanes, tornado, wind event, high water; emergency responses such as fires, auto accidents, etc.).

Responsibilities

  • Handle basic arrangements for field assignments, including loading and delivery of materials, line clearances, performing switching, grounding circuits, installing protective devices, and contacting property owners for tree trimming and right-of-way matters.
  • Install or remove poles and their attachments, line conductors, insulators, static and communication lines, affiliated equipment, and underground cables. This includes framing, erecting, aligning poles, assembling and removing guys, cutting and trimming trees, stringing, sagging, tying-in, and connecting conductor wires and cables, installing and removing cutouts and air break switches, laying and connecting cable lengths, installing street lighting equipment, and overseeing assigned work.
  • Install and remove transformers, transformer supports, regulators, and associated protective equipment, build platforms and enclosures, install mats, connect transformer leads and associated devices.
  • Install, remove, repair, and relocate services, entrance runs, and self-contained watthour meters. Cooperate with meter personnel for related equipment.
  • Maintain poles, towers, transmission, distribution, and street lighting circuits, transformers, and associated devices. This includes relocating and replacing poles, renewing crossarms, replacing insulators, repairing guy assemblies, resagging and retying conductors, replacing cutouts, repairing switches, changing transformer taps, checking oil levels, trimming trees, tightening contacts, patrolling, switching, and performing load and voltage surveys.
  • Maintain street lighting circuits and associated equipment, locate and correct causes of outages, and adjust control devices.
  • Perform planned or emergency operations using hot line tools for replacing poles and attachments and transferring conductors and supports, using prescribed safety equipment.
  • Assist in checking completed work, observing workmanship, site condition, and adherence to Company standards. Release checked lines and equipment for operation, notify concerned employees, remove grounds and protective devices, and cooperate in energizing operations.
  • Perform other line work and related operations such as repairing tools and equipment, preassembling materials, making miscellaneous repairs, painting equipment, operating automotive equipment and associated line equipment, tree trimming, unloading and storing line poles, and transporting heavy equipment.
  • Maintain work equipment and areas in a clean, orderly condition, observe Company safety rules and practices, check safety equipment, attend safety meetings, participate in artificial respiration practice, and become familiar with safety manuals and procedures.
  • Operate two-way space radio facilities and check equipment for proper operating condition.
  • Stand Service watch, assume duties of a Line Serviceman, act as foreman for a crew when assigned, assist in training apprentice linemen, and perform other related work.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work independently and to work all hours as needed, day or night, weekends or holidays, and in all weather conditions.
  • Travel and stay overnight to various locations and work extended hours to assist in major storm restoration.
