This position will be located at the Lafayette Ops Center. The applicant must live within 30 road miles of the assigned Operations Center. Under indirect supervision, this role involves installing or removing transmission and distribution poles, towers, line conductors, transformers, services, meters, street lighting equipment, and static and communication lines. It also includes repairing and maintaining these components, assisting in training apprentice linemen, handling emergency operations, and performing other related work. The starting pay is $56.43 per hour.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or applicable equivalent, preferably supplemented by courses in electrical circuits, wiring diagrams, and related equipment equivalent to three months of full-time study.
  • Four years of Company experience as Lineman Apprentice, or equivalent, of which one year should have been as Lineman Apprentice-4th Year.
  • Good working knowledge of line work and electrical circuits.
  • General familiarity with local substation locations, existing voltages, street locations, and rural areas.
  • Ability to work on own initiative, lead and cooperate with fellow employees, train and instruct apprentice linemen, and use tact in dealing with the public.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Thorough familiarity with the Company's safety policies and practices, particularly with respect to taking equipment out of service, holding for clearance, and restoring to service.
  • Alert, resourceful, capable of carrying out responsibilities, and able to make quick and correct decisions in emergencies.
  • Ability to receive and transmit orders and instructions effectively.
  • Satisfactorily completed the Company's training courses for the job of Lineman "A" and passed the promotional examination.
  • Must pass the entrance examination (written and qualifying) into the grade of Line Specialist – Journeyman.
  • Ability to successfully complete SAT.
  • Ability to attend various training classes.
  • DOT Certification.
  • DOT Physical.
  • Ability to obtain a valid Class A commercial driver’s license (CDL) in the state for which you are hired within one year of hire.
  • Successful background and drug screen.
  • Must live within 30 road miles of the assigned Operations Center.
  • Weight restriction of 275 pounds as an essential function of the job.
  • Ability to stand a minimum of 5-6 hours.
  • Ability to sit for a minimum of 2-3 hours.
  • Ability to move frequently to unload equipment and to install/maintain/repair equipment.
  • Ability to lift up to 76 pounds.
  • Ability to push/pull weights up to 116 pounds.
  • Ability to carry up to 90 pounds.
  • Ability to frequently climb or use authorized equipment to reach various heights and breadths.
  • Ability to frequently and repetitively bend/stoop/squat.
  • Ability to differentiate between colors (color vision).
  • Manual dexterity to operate small hand tools, turn small knobs, etc.
  • Ability to obtain respirator clearance.

Nice To Haves

  • Certificate from Lineman’s Training School or currently enrolled.
  • Certificate from Technical School Line program or currently enrolled.
  • Military experience.
  • Experience in the electric utility industry.
  • Training and/or work experience with climbing different types of structures (wood, steel, etc.).
  • Previous work experience or training working near power lines and electricity (residential, commercial, overhead lines, or underground lines).
  • Experience with responding to natural disasters or emergency situations (storm response such as hurricanes, tornado, wind event, high water; emergency responses such as fires, auto accidents, etc.).

Responsibilities

  • Handle basic arrangements for field assignments, including loading and delivery of material, line clearances, performing switching, grounding circuits, installing protective devices, and contacting property owners for tree trimming and right-of-way matters.
  • Install or remove poles, attachments, line conductors, insulators, static and communication lines, and underground cables, including framing, erecting, aligning poles, assembling guys, cutting trees, stringing and connecting conductors, installing line devices, laying cable, and installing street lighting equipment.
  • Install and remove transformers, regulators, and associated equipment, build platforms and enclosures, and install mats.
  • Install, remove, repair, and relocate services, entrance runs, and meters; cooperate with meter personnel on related equipment.
  • Maintain poles, towers, transmission, distribution, and street lighting circuits, transformers, and associated devices, including relocating and replacing poles, renewing crossarms, replacing insulators, repairing guy assemblies, resagging conductors, replacing cutouts, repairing switches, changing transformer taps, trimming trees, and performing patrols and switching.
  • Maintain street lighting circuits and associated equipment, locating and correcting outages, and adjusting control devices.
  • Perform planned or emergency operations using hot line tools for replacing poles and attachments and transferring conductors and supports, using prescribed safety equipment.
  • Assist in checking completed work, observing workmanship and site conditions, releasing lines and equipment for operation, and removing grounds and protective devices.
  • Perform other line work such as repairing tools and equipment, preassembling materials, making repairs, painting equipment, operating automotive equipment and bucket trucks, tree trimming, and handling heavy equipment.
  • Maintain work equipment and areas in a clean condition, observe safety rules, check safety equipment, attend safety meetings, and participate in artificial respiration practice.
  • Operate two-way radio facilities and check equipment for proper operation.
  • Stand Service watch, act as foreman when assigned, assist in training apprentice linemen, and perform other related work.
  • Perform work required during planned and emergency outages, including working day or night, weekends, or holidays, and in all weather conditions.
  • Travel and stay overnight to various locations and work extended hours for major storm restoration.
