The Dispensing Optician evaluates prescriptions in conjunction with a client's vocational and avocational visual requirements. They determine the client's current lens prescription, when necessary, using a lensometer or lens analyzer and the client's eyeglasses. This role recommends specific lenses, lens coatings, and frames to suit client needs and assists the client in selecting frames according to style and color, coordinating frames with facial and eye measurements and optical prescription. The Dispensing Optician measures the client's bridge and eye size, temple length, vertex distance, pupillary distance, and optical centers of eyes. They prepare work orders and instructions for grinding lenses and fabricating eyeglasses, and verify that finished lenses are ground to specification. Additionally, the role involves heating, shaping, or bending plastic or metal frames to adjust eyeglasses to fit the client, and instructing clients in adapting to, wearing, and caring for eyeglasses. The Dispensing Optician also sells and fits contact lenses, sells optical goods such as binoculars, plano sunglasses, magnifying glasses, and low vision aids, and repairs damaged frames. They select and order frames for display, grind lens edges or apply coating to lenses, and compute the amount of sale and collect payment for services.
