About The Position

Norfolk State University’s Police Department invites applicants for the position of Dispatcher/Emergency Coordinator I. The Emergency Coordinator performs a variety of communication and operational duties in support of public safety to the University community.

Requirements

  • Basic knowledge of work activities of a Police Department/Law Enforcement agency.
  • Skilled in keyboarding and use of Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts including nights, holidays and weekends.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely.
  • Ability to interpret policies and procedures.
  • Experienced in dealing with the public and working in an office setting.
  • Must be able to obtain Basic Dispatcher certification within one year of hire.
  • High School diploma or an equivalent combination of education and training that provides the requisite knowledge, skills, abilities and experience.
  • Skilled in the use of communication equipment including two-way transmitter, computer systems, and video surveillance equipment.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience with Law Enforcement regulations to include incident reports and crime classifications.
  • Certification as a Certified Emergency Coordinator, or ability to complete course within 6 months or less of employment.
  • Previous experience and certification in the Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN) and National Crime Information Network systems (VCIN) or ability to obtain certification.
  • Previous experience with surveillance equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Prioritize all emergencies and non-emergency calls received and appropriately disseminate request for routine assistance and emergency services.
  • Monitor all audio and video surveillance equipment, operate the Virginia Criminal Information Network and the National Crime Information Center computer terminal and two way hand-held radios.
  • This position is considered essential personnel which means that the successful candidate will be required to come to work or be called in to work in cases of emergency, inclement weather or other staff shortages on all shifts. Must be able to Work 12 hour shifts.
