About The Position

The mission of the Louisiana Department of Health is to protect and promote health and to ensure access to medical, preventive, and rehabilitative services for all residents of the State of Louisiana. This position may be filled in the following parishes: Acadia, Evangeline, Iberia, Lafayette, St. Landry, St. Martin, Vermilion Parish. Join our Tuberculosis (TB) Control Team as a Disease Intervention Specialist 1-3 and play a critical role in protecting communities. In this dynamic field-based position, you'll conduct investigations, interview patients and contacts, provide education and counseling, track cases, and help prevent the spread of tuberculosis. Requirements

  • Three years of experience in disease investigation and prevention activities; OR Three years of experience in investigatory work, social services, nursing, or as a medical laboratory technician or assistant; OR A bachelor's degree.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct field investigations and follow-up activities for tuberculosis (TB) suspects, active cases, contacts, and high-risk individuals to support disease prevention and control efforts.
  • Interview TB patients and contacts to obtain case histories, identify potential exposures, and document findings in accordance with program requirements.
  • Educate patients, contacts, and community members about TB transmission, symptoms, treatment, and prevention while providing counseling and referrals for medical evaluation and care.
  • Monitor patient compliance with treatment plans, encourage adherence to prescribed medication regimens, and provide ongoing support to improve health outcomes.
  • Collect sputum specimens, administer and interpret TB skin tests, and accurately document laboratory and clinical results using established procedures.
  • Deliver and observe directly administered TB medications in community settings, ensuring proper dosage adherence and maintaining detailed treatment records.
  • Collaborate with healthcare providers, schools, correctional facilities, shelters, and other community partners to conduct investigations, provide TB education, and support outbreak prevention and reporting activities.
