About The Position

The Louisiana Department of Health's mission is to protect and promote health and to ensure access to medical, preventive, and rehabilitative services for all residents of the State of Louisiana. This is a promotional opportunity open only to current permanent employees in a classified position with Louisiana Department of Health, Office of Public Health. This role involves leading critical disease intervention efforts, overseeing investigations, managing active and suspected TB cases, and guiding a team dedicated to preventing and eliminating the spread of tuberculosis. Requirements

  • Six years of experience in disease investigation and prevention activities; OR Three years of experience in investigatory work, social services, nursing, or as a medical laboratory technician or assistant plus three years of experience in disease investigation and prevention activities; OR A bachelor's degree plus three years of experience in disease investigation and prevention activities; OR An advanced degree in epidemiology, public health, in a biological science, or nursing plus two years of experience in disease investigation and prevention activities.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate patients with possible or verified TB disease and TB infection to ensure adequate case management and completion of treatment.
  • Conduct contact investigations of TB suspects, cases, and contacts.
  • Conduct interviews of active TB patients in the region with the purpose of identifying and evaluating high-risk contacts.
  • Apply and read TB skin tests, perform venipuncture for blood tests, collect sputum samples and process specimens for laboratory submittal.
  • Conduct Directly Observed Therapy (DOT) for pulmonary TB suspects and cases in Region 1.
  • Assure that medication compliance is maintained for adequate TB therapy and completion of therapy.
  • Conduct Directly Observed Preventative Therapy (DOPT) for contacts who are children and/or contacts to resistant cases.
  • Monitor Video Directly Observed Therapy (VDOT) patient videos as needed.
  • Responsible for overall case management of their assigned tuberculosis cases and suspects, ensuring clients’ laboratory testing, medication pickups, and medical evaluations are current throughout the length of therapy.
  • Proper follow-up and management of contacts to all cases and contacts assigned by TB Control Program Director.
  • Notify TB Director of any patient issues of concern, including critical laboratory results, non-compliance, or medication side-effects.
  • Maintain LATB core data items and case management fields.
  • Ensure consistency and completeness in parish health unit electronic health record and TB databases (LATB).
  • Complete NBS core data items reported to CDC.
