About The Position

The Disability Management Specialist (Student Services Professional III) position is within the Department of Disability Support Services (DSS) at California State University, Fullerton (Cal State Fullerton). DSS is a civil rights office dedicated to ensuring students with disabilities have access and equal opportunities in academic programs and services. The department promotes an inclusive and accessible community, removing barriers and celebrating equity. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent from an accredited four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution.
  • Three years of professional student services work experience in the field.
  • Ability to plan, develop, coordinate, supervise, and organize programs and activities.
  • Ability to interact with a diverse student population, faculty, staff, and the public.
  • Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action.
  • Ability to advise students individually and in groups on complex student-related matters.
  • Ability to complete assignments without detailed instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to acquire knowledge of campus procedures, activities, and the overall organization.
  • A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s Degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Counseling, Education, Higher Education Administration, Educational Psychology or Rehabilitation Counseling, or Disability Services.
  • Successful experience in a disability specialist or advising role, particularly with college students in a higher education environment.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience working with individuals with disabilities in an educational setting.
  • Working knowledge of CSU guidelines and practices.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the provision of services for students with qualified disabilities requiring access to programs and services.
  • Serve as the primary contact for prospective and newly admitted students, providing New Student Appointments.
  • Review highly sensitive and confidential disability documentation.
  • Determine reasonable accommodations for students.
  • Provide ongoing disability management support.
  • Manage a caseload of an assigned group of students.
  • Assess and determine the nature and extent of a wide variety of disabilities, necessary accommodations, and required support services.
  • Advise students regarding classroom accommodations and disability-related challenges impacting education/career options.
  • Consult with faculty regarding student needs and disability-related course concerns.
  • Interpret federal and state laws and regulations for students, faculty, and the campus community.
  • Support the office in facilitating disability management and academic support workshops for DSS students.
  • Facilitate projects supporting outreach and ensuring high-quality service delivery for students, faculty, and staff.
  • Provide coordination for DSS events, collaborative events, and student-led disability awareness initiatives.
  • Assist the testing team during peak operational periods, especially finals week, to ensure timely and effective delivery of student accommodations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
