About The Position

Under the direction of the Disability Management and Leaves Supervisor, the Disability Management Specialist provides disability management services to employees with disabilities, injuries, illnesses or medical conditions as mandated by ADA/FEHA, UC policies and collective bargaining agreements. Provides expert guidance, referrals and resources to employees with disabilities and their supervisors/managers related to the reasonable accommodation process. Obtains and clarifies medical documentation of disability related limitations/restrictions, facilitates the interactive dialogue between the employee and supervisor/manager, conducts research, develops and recommends individualized accommodation plans.

Requirements

  • Advanced knowledge of the legal framework involving ADA and accommodations for individuals with disabilities through state and federal laws and regulations.
  • Advanced knowledge of procedures for assessing and determining disability accommodation issues, including the Disability Compliance Office procedures.
  • Advanced knowledge of assessment, interpreting medical documentation of disability related limitations/restrictions, facilitating the interactive process and providing reasonable accommodations in a large, complex organization.
  • Skill to communicate with leaders, legal, and other organizational entities regarding employee accommodations and work needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide job development and employment counseling services to clients.
  • Knowledge of mental health issues and sensitivity for mental health clients.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills. Ability to communicate effectively and with confidence.
  • Ability to build relationships, collaborate and problem solve across all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to prepare clear, concise summaries and reports.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Skill and sensitivity in dealing with others. Ability to handle difficult and complicated issues with professionalism and sound judgement.
  • Ability to maintain high level of confidentiality and safeguard information.
  • Bachelor’s degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Minimum of 5 years of work experience in Disability Management/Vocational Rehabilitation.
  • Experience delivering effective workshops and training.
  • Must be able to provide proof of work authorization

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of UC policies and procedures and UC collective bargaining agreements.
  • Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC), or Certified Disability Management Specialist (CDMS), or Certified Professional in Disability Management (CPDM), or HR Certification Institute (PHR or SPHR) preferred.
