About The Position

Capital Power (TSX: CPX) is a growth-oriented North American power producer delivering responsible energy solutions across Canada and the United States. We are seeking a Director, US Thermal Business Development to lead the origination and execution of a multi-year pipeline of utility-scale thermal generation opportunities across the U.S. This is a high-impact, externally facing role shaping Capital Power’s thermal growth strategy and translating evolving utility reliability and capacity needs into long-term contracted assets. This results driven leader will operate with significant autonomy - originating proprietary opportunities, building senior utility relationships, and advancing projects through financial close to drive meaningful capacity growth and long-term value.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s in Engineering, Business, Finance, Economics, or related field (MBA preferred)
  • 10–15+ years in power development, business development, or project finance with a strong U.S. thermal track record
  • Proven success originating and advancing projects through financial close
  • Deep, established relationships with utility procurement and executive teams (e.g., PJM, MISO, ERCOT)
  • Strong knowledge of ISO/RTO markets, capacity structures, and interconnection processes
  • Experience leading complex, cross-functional project execution
  • Advanced financial modeling, valuation, and investment analysis capabilities
  • Expertise in structuring and negotiating power sector commercial agreements
  • Technical understanding of thermal generation (peakers, CCGT, flexible capacity)
  • Executive presence, strong judgment, and an ownership mindset with the ability to drive results independently

Responsibilities

  • Build and execute a multi-year development pipeline with clear line of sight to contracted MWs and financial close
  • Originate proprietary brownfield and greenfield opportunities, including site control and interconnection strategy
  • Define and execute market entry and origination strategies across key ISO/RTO markets
  • Lead and deepen executive-level relationships with utilities, co-ops, and load-serving entities
  • Convert utility procurement needs and IRP insights into actionable development opportunities
  • Lead cross-functional teams with direct accountability for advancing projects through the full development lifecycle.
  • Own project execution, including business cases, financial analysis, and risk assessment
  • Structure development opportunities for successful contracting and commercialization
  • Provide market intelligence on capacity markets, regulatory shifts, and competitive dynamics
  • Influence strategy, capital allocation, and pipeline priorities with senior leadership
