About The Position

The BNSF Railway's Transportation Department plays a crucial role in ensuring the timely and safe movement of goods across one of North America's largest freight rail transportation networks. This position offers the opportunity to work in a fast-paced environment, coordinating and overseeing the complex logistics of rail transportation. Ideal candidates will have a strong commitment to safety, leadership, problem-solving skills, and a dedication to enhancing the efficiency and reliability of our transportation services. They would have successfully led large-scale railroad or transportation operations, brings deep experience managing frontline leaders, and is equally comfortable in the field and in data-driven discussions with senior executives. This position will work with the Continuous Improvement Team in support of the Transportation Department.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Logistics, Business, Finance, Engineering, or related field preferred
  • Minimum 7 years of railroad or equivalent experience
  • Minimum of 5 years leading operating front-line supervisors preferred
  • Does not require BNSF’s assistance, now or in the future, (whether monetary, through sponsorship, or otherwise) to obtain, maintain, or extend employment authorization (including H-1B, STEM OPT/CPT, or TN nonimmigrant status).
  • Able and willing to relocate anywhere on the BNSF Railway operating system (western 28 states) upon hire, career progression, and/or business needs. If you have any location restrictions, please answer "No."
  • Capable of visually distinguishing among red, blue, green, yellow and lunar (clear light) colors & able to see at night AND I am able to hear and, with training, distinguish auditory signals.
  • Strong understanding of key operational metrics and railroad terminal processes
  • Advanced proficiency with Excel, SQL, Power BI, Tableau, and related measurement/analytics tools
  • Proven ability to quickly analyze and synthesize complex data from multiple sources
  • Strong critical thinking, analytical problem-solving, and project management skills
  • Excellent communication skills, including presenting to all levels, translating technical topics for non-technical audiences, collaborating with business process experts, and training others in best practices
  • Self-starter able to work effectively in a dynamic environment with minimal supervision
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and lead teams and manage multiple initiatives simultaneously

Responsibilities

  • Support Merchandise Terminal processes and operational execution while serving as a performance/process resource for planning, technology, merchandise tools, terminal processing tools, and operations.
  • Lead continuous improvement efforts by engaging terminal leaders, facilitating cross-functional workshops and problem-solving, participating in performance reviews, and driving local and network process improvements.
  • Develop, enhance, and maintain operational process documents and best practices, including the Issue Resolution Process, to ensure consistent understanding of terminal expectations and sustainable improvements.
  • Train, mentor, and communicate with field personnel and front-line leaders on new tools, enhancements, and CI methodologies, including facilitating FLS training modules.
  • Lead and support cross-departmental projects, performing operational and data analysis to identify root causes, enhance transportation tools, and simultaneously manage multiple initiatives through to completion.
  • Collaborate closely with Operations, Corporate Measures, Service Design, bnsf | tech, division operations and NOC leadership, and the Continuous Improvement Team to align with key performance indicators and present recommendations to all levels of management.
