About The Position

Petco is a company dedicated to helping pets live their best lives, operating for over 60 years. They provide meals, toys, supplies, and expert support, nurturing the pet-human bond through over 1,500 stores, 250+ Vetco Total Care hospitals, preventive care clinics, and distribution centers across the U.S., Mexico, and Puerto Rico. Petco also founded Petco Love, supporting animal welfare groups and facilitating adoptions. The Director, Software Engineering role is responsible for long-range technology strategy planning for Petco's commerce platform and integrated systems. This involves working with technical leaders to define vision, architecture, and stack, leading timely technical decisions, managing policy development for complex business issues, and providing leadership to cross-functional teams. The director partners with Product Development, advocates for enterprise technology initiatives, identifies emerging trends, creates realistic roadmaps, and ensures accurate and timely delivery of products and services. The role also involves leveraging engineering, problem-solving, and influencing skills for process and risk management solutions, and coordinating outsourced engineering efforts.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering or other related fields, or equivalent work experience.
  • 12+ years of IT and business industry work experience in managing multiple, large, cross-functional teams or projects, and influencing senior level management and key stakeholders.
  • Requires advanced technical and business knowledge in software development life cycle, quality assurance, project management and other related disciplines/processes.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for long-range technology strategy planning for our commerce platform and integrated systems
  • Works with technical leaders to define and refine vision, architecture, and stack; leads efforts to make timely technical decisions
  • Manages policy development to address complex business issues, provides leadership to cross-functional teams.
  • Partners with Product Development team to influence what is built for business consumption
  • Advocates for enterprise technology initiatives in the enterprise technology backlog structure
  • Identifies interdependencies and emerging trends across interrelated technology efforts and programs to continuously improve products and services
  • Partners with Program/Project and Tech SMEs to create realistic roadmaps and set expectations with customers; stays close to the product, guides the process to ensure accurate and timely delivery
  • Leverages engineering, problem solving and influencing skills to ensure process and risk management solutions are also technically sound
  • Coordinates outsourced engineering effort from teams with differing skill sets
  • Leads large cross functional teams that work on the most complex business issues
  • Minimal supervision with wide latitude for independent judgment.
  • Provides solutions to issues utilizing judgment.
