About The Position

The Office of Equal Employment Opportunity (OEEO) is responsible for preventing, investigating, and addressing employment discrimination and harassment within the New York City Police Department (NYPD). OEEO leads significant policy and training initiatives, including those related to pregnancy and lactation accommodations, facial hair and beards, religious head coverings, and transgender inclusion guidelines, ensuring the Department remains responsive to and supportive of the diverse needs of its members. OEEO works closely with complainants to conduct thorough and impartial investigations, addressing inappropriate conduct and fostering a workplace environment that is safe, equitable, and respectful. The Reasonable Accommodations Unit manages requests for accommodations based on disability or religion for all members of the service. In addition, the OEEO Liaison Network plays a critical role in supporting the implementation of EEO policies and assisting with complaint response and investigative processes. OEEO also oversees the Department’s compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The Disability Services Facilitator (DSF) serves as the primary liaison between the Department and the public, coordinating efforts to meet federal, state, and local accessibility requirements and ensuring continued ADA compliance.

Requirements

  • Admission to the New York State Bar
  • Four years of recent full-time responsible, relevant, satisfactory legal experience subsequent to admission to any bar
  • Eighteen months of which must have been in the supervision of other attorneys, in an administrative, managerial or executive capacity, or performing highly complex and significant legal work.
  • Must remain Members of the New York State Bar in good standing for the duration of this employment.

Responsibilities

  • Reviewing and processing employee requests for reasonable accommodation in accordance with criteria established by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) and applicable laws.
  • Making determinations related to the reasonable accommodation process and providing guidance and support to the Assistant Commissioner, Office of Equal Employment Opportunity.
  • Drafting official correspondence related to accommodation requests.
  • Coordinating meetings to review and discuss accommodation requests.
  • Preparing and generating reports to track accommodation activity.
  • Ensuring all tracking systems are accurate, current, and properly maintained.
  • Managing records associated with accommodation requests to ensure the integrity, accuracy, and confidentiality of all documentation.
  • Delivering workforce training focused on reasonable accommodation policies and procedures.
  • Assisting employees and managers in understanding their rights and responsibilities regarding reasonable accommodations within the Department.
  • Ensuring compliance with Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) and EEOC laws, rules, and regulations.
